8 years ago, I hesitated between becoming an architect or an engineer. And I took the unconventional path of choosing both. Architect: a designer, planner and superviser of building construction. Engineer: a designer, builder or maintainer of machines or structures. Architect-engineer: there is no definition (yet). Buildings have become more and more complex. Embodied carbon, heating, ventilation and on-site energy production complicate, for the best, building design. Buildings have also become systems. A programme is designed with diagrams. Facades and structures are designed with qualitative (beauty, wellbeing) and quantitative parameters (cost, embodied carbon, glazed areas) where all solutions can be optimised. But buildings are systems. Each design decision impacts other parameters and the end result. Designing a larger window increases daylighting, potential glare, the risk of overheating and costs. Architect-engineers are unconventional because they spent at least 6 years studying construction from two very different perspectives. The reward is that they have a holistic understanding of building design. They aren’t necessarily the best architects, nor the best engineers, but the one able to understand relationships between building elements at multiple scales. They eventually make the best design decisions. So here is my definition. Architect-engineers: a person who understand and design buildings holistically and collaboratively, for the best. So 8 years ago, I did not only made a career choice. I made a commitment to provide the best solution to our built environment. _ ps - Enjoyed this post? Concept to Reality! Designing a building involves several stages, starting with conceptualization. Define your goals, consider functionality, and draft initial ideas. Move on to schematic design, creating floor plans and elevations. Develop the design through design development, refining details. Obtain necessary approvals and permits. Transition to construction documents, specifying materials and detailing. Construction begins once plans are approved. Regular inspections ensure compliance. Finally, post-construction, assess the building's performance and address any issues. Each step requires collaboration between architects, engineers, and builders to bring the concept to reality.
