IEPs, 504s, SDI, MTSS, Scaffolds, Modifications....the list goes on. How we leverage Specially Designed Instruction to support specific learning disabilities requires an understanding of it. Because, no, it is not the same as differentiation! In my newest blog, I break down what #SDI is, what it is not and how school-leaders can begin to integrate SDI in their school-community. Children’s Book Author, Writer, Professor, Lecturer, Director, Literacy Specialist, Classroom Teacher, Child Advocate
The typical day for first year teachers has its ups and downs. Having the experience of feeling like riding a roller coaster for 180 days. In order to retain new teachers, they need and deserve the following: 1. Qualtiy mentoring 2. Ongoing professional development 3. Scheduled opportunities to collaborate and observe other teachers 4. Principal support Although, we may know what new teachers need. Yet, the lack of numbers 1-4 continue to contribute to new teacher turnover. #teachers #education #k12education #educationalleadership #schoolprincipals #reading #earlychildhood #earlychildhoodeducation #superintendents #highereducation #literacy #professionaldevelopment

How are you handling professional development in your district or school? Let’s set up some time to talk.
We asked the staff at Washington Heights Academy if they would recommend Teaching Matters to other education professionals, and their responses were pretty inspiring! #TeachingMatters

Annually observed on the Wednesday during American Education Week, National Education Support Professionals Day honors the contributions of school support employees. These support professionals provide invaluable services and are essential partners in a child’s education. The day honors a long list of professionals who keep schools running smoothly. They include all secretaries, classroom aides, cafeteria workers, maintenance workers, bus drivers, and the others who support educators, school leadership, and the students, too. These professionals do their part in making public schools exceptional for every child so they can be safe, learn, grow and achieve. #EducationSupportProfessionalsDay #suhsdsped #thankyou #weappreciateyou

"As an educator, I know that the best way to grow your students is to grow yourself. And it seemed like the next natural step after getting my teaching certificate was to enroll in a rank change program. I chose this rank change program because of the flexibility and affordability." – Pamela Wood, BloomBoard Rank Change Program Graduate and 1st Grade Teacher, Marshall County School District, Kentucky In partnership with select regional service centers, BloomBoard developed a low-cost continuing education option that supports Kentucky teachers in earning rank change to deepen their teaching practice and move them up the pay scale. Districts across Kentucky are investing in this new program to help improve teacher recruitment and retention. Program features and benefits: 🏫 Job-embedded program allows educators to demonstrate mastery within the context of their own classrooms. ⏰ Self-paced courses make the program accessible and flexible for busy teachers. 💪 Personalized pathways give educators the ability to customize learning to align with their professional goals. 💰Affordable cost with financing options that could allow educators to defer payment. Beyond Proud of You Mark! To all of my educators if you have any words of wisdom for my younger brother please drop them in the comment section!

My first year of teaching has finally kicked off as today was Open House at Perry Middle School! Welcome to Mr. Nooks' 8th Grade ELA and SS class. I want to first thank God for placing me in the right places at the right time. I also want to thank Dr. Lazunia Frierson, Ed. D., Dr. Heath Burch, and the Perry Middle School Administration for taking a risk and hiring me as a student in FVSU's Education Program, allowing me to complete my last semester of Direct Teaching. That’s history in itself, and I plan to make my MARK. Mrs. Duran has been the glue for all of this, as she is my mentoring teacher and is always there in case I need anything. Although I’m nervous, I know I am more than capable. Let’s work. Houston County Board of Education #blackmenineducation #Alphamenineducation

TEDxTAMU Speaker: I help schools shrink discipline referrals and increase students’ academic success by implementing the solution focused approach
"Years ago, as an observer of student teachers, my approach was different than others. Rather than scrutinizing the student teacher, my gaze focused on the students, searching for signs of engagement, interest and subtle nods of understanding. This was the true measure of a teacher’s ability to teach their subject in a way that grasped their students’ attention. In a high school labeled "at-risk," I encountered a particularly striking scene..
