Although many agree Bordeaux is not as relevant as many years ago, at this time of the year all of us looked at the incredible wine world of negociants, chateaux and curriers that make Bordeaux an unique place. This year even more. The 2023 Bordeaux En Primeur campaign features lowered prices, making it an excellent opportunity for buyers. Up to 40% for Leoville Les Cases. A challenging growing season marked by mildiou and variable weather is the reason. But also the economic situation and the crises in Asia. French whisky is a thing. In France. Elsewhere? Nobody cares (yet). What to do? At the distiller/brand level: - make good products - take the time to age them properly (no corners cut) - find the right partners (importers/wholesalers) with the right networks/voices on said markets - ideally, learn about the cultures of the export markets one wants to conquer by spending time on site, being curious/open-minded. understand the dynamics of said market - work with local partners (aka importers) to adapt one's discourse & releases to said cultures/markets - visit the markets/taste people on the stuff as often as possible (2 to 3 times/yr), tell a genuine & relatable story, be humble, understand that nobody is waiting for you. All the while, at the federation/trade group/association of producers level: - determine what's special about "Le Whisky Francais" real things that the consumer will understand vs big words & hollow sentences - find some marketing euros - spend above mentioned budget wisely small budgets of a few tens to a few hundred thousands euros are better spent on: organic outreach via social media group participation to relevant trade-shows targeted market-visit as a group "ex: French Whisky Tour" -> NYC, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, DC, Austin, Dallas, Houston, SF, LA, Seattle... getting key buyers over to France for an immersive few days experience across several distilleries (great article with very good insight from some of France's best (en Francais, but GPT will translate quasi perfectly) shared by Jean-Noël PELLETAN. The Graves classification, established in 1953, was a response to the request of the Syndicat de défense de l’appellation des Graves, an organization dedicated to protecting the appellation. The Institut national des appellations d’origine (INAO) played a pivotal role in creating this classification. This system aimed to recognize and categorize the quality of wines produced in the Graves region, specifically in the AOC Pessac-Léognan. The criteria for classification were based on the municipality and the type of wine, distinguishing between red and white. Unlike some other classifications, such as the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, the Graves classification has a unique feature—it comprises only one level with no hierarchy. Additionally, it is noteworthy that this classification is not subject to revision. There are a total of 16 Crus in the Graves classification, all of which belong to the AOC Pessac-Léognan. These 16 Crus are further categorized into 7 Château (Red), 3 Château (White), 5 Château (Red and White) 1 Domaine (Red and White) wines. One remarkable aspect of the classification is the inclusion of Château Haut-Brion, which holds the distinction of being the only Bordeaux wine to be classified twice. Château Haut-Brion is recognized in both the Graves classification and the Grands Crus Classés en 1855, a classification that originated more than a century earlier.
