Mining is Not Sustainable, but can be Climate Positive! Mining plays a crucial role in the energy transition and decarbonization of our economy. Responsibly extracted minerals are essential inputs for the manufacture of clean technologies, such as batteries, solar panels, and wind turbines. However, traditional mining has often been criticized for its negative environmental and/or social impact. Fortunately, most mining companies have adopted a more responsible approach, incorporating practices that prioritize environmental preservation and the well-being of local communities. These new modalities of sustainable mining optimize the use of resources such as water, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and develop social programs that benefit the communities near the operations. Far from being an option, this responsible mining has become essential to move towards a sustainable and climate-positive economy. Promoting and adopting these sustainable mining models is key to fully harnessing the potential of natural resources in the fight against climate change. Our contribution to the event will be to present how to reduce socio-environmental risks to have safe and sustainable mining projects.
