Water is a precious shared resource with immense environmental, social, cultural, and economic value. As the demand for transition minerals and metals continues to rise, our industry must take proactive steps to prevent water contamination and land degradation. Today, ICMM and INAP:International Network for Acid Prevention launched a new tool to help mining companies prevent and reduce water pollution caused by acid rock drainage and metal leaching from mines. This is an urgent challenge that demands robust measures and a proactive approach – requiring informed, site-level planning from the earliest stages of a mine's operation through to its closure. The tool aims to safeguard water quality while reducing long-term remediation costs, supporting more sustainable practices across the industry. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/esAUYFQT

♻️ Advancing Circularity of Mining & Metals Value Chains At #Davos2025, one thing was clear: circularity is not a nice-to-have—it’s a necessity. This morning, ICMM’s CEO Rohitesh Dhawan joined Gustavo Pimenta (Vale), Andrea Fuder (Volvo Group), Hanne Simensen (Norsk Hydro), and Marc de Wit (Circle Economy Consulting) to share insights that can unlock a circular energy transition across mining and metals value chains. Some key takeaways include: 🔹 Zero waste mining progress being made by companies in reprocessing, better technology, and leaving a positive legacy. 🔹 Circularity in manufacturing means designing for longevity - keeping durable metals and their ultimate products in use as long as possible. 🔹 Collaboration is key – to achieve these goals, we need to rethink systems designed for a linear world, sharing struggles as well as successes to accelerate progress. 💡 Yet, as Marc de Wit reminded us, only 7% of the 100 billion tonnes of materials the world uses annually are recycled—a challenge we must tackle together. #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #Davos2025

Today we are proud to officially launch the Global Tailings Management Institute, an independent, multi-stakeholder governed organisation dedicated to improving the safety of mine tailings facilities worldwide. The GTMI will drive and assess the implementation of Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management, with the goal to achieve zero harm to people and the environment. ICMM is one of the co-founders of the institute, alongside the UN Environment Programme and the Principles for Responsible Investment. The tragic Brumadinho dam collapse in Brazil on 25 January 2019, which claimed 272 lives, was a stark wake-up call for the entire industry. It marked the beginning of a vital journey to make these facilities safer for people and the environment, with the establishment of the Global Tailings Review and later the GISTM. The establishment of the GTMI is a major step forward in this ongoing mission to prevent future failures. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/d7fqV2qN And visit the GTMI website: www.thegtmi.org

Metals account for 10% of global material extraction, and will play a key role in the scale-up of energy transition infrastructure and the electrification of the transport and mobility system – critical mineral demand is expected to grow 4-6x by 2040. 🌎ICMM is proud to have contributed to World Economic Forum’s ‘Nature Positive: Role of the Mining and Metals Sector’ Report. Developed in collaboration with Oliver Wyman, the Report outlines the sector’s key impacts and dependencies on nature, and the priority actions corporate leaders can take to halt and reverse nature loss. By taking these five priority actions, the mining and metals sector could unlock more than $430 billion of additional value by 2030: 🌱 Transform operations across the mine life cycle by avoiding, then reducing, land pollution and emissions impacts, and restoring in line with the mitigation hierarchy. 💧 Improve water stewardship by avoiding then reducing, water abstraction, use and pollution in mining operations and landscapes. 🔄 Expand circularity and source responsibly by embracing standards and transparency, engaging with suppliers and customers. 🌳 Restore and regenerate landscapes by supporting nature conservation and restoration with local communities. 🤝 Transform policy systems and collaborate across sectors.
