Just over 2 weeks ago, I started volunteering with Shout UK on their 24/7 crisis textline supporting highly distressed children, young people and adults who are struggling to cope. On Saturday, I took my 10th conversation - progressing to a Level 2 volunteer - and also received my first bit of supervisor feedback!
It meant so much to receive this feedback after a night of some difficult conversations, and to know that the work we’re doing as volunteers really is helping to make a difference to those we support.
In light of the recent statistics from the Office of National Statistics which indicate a troubling increase in suicide rates for 2023 compared with the last 3 years, it’s never been more important that we all pull together and do what we can to support those in need.
With every conversation, my empathy, kindness and active listening skills are growing stronger, and I’ve found that I’m also able to use these good contact techniques in my everyday life, in addition to on the platform. I’m currently completing a weekly 4 hour night shift from 9pm-1am to support texters at a time when data shows they are most vulnerable, and I’m looking forward to taking my next night shift this Friday where I hope to be able to continue supporting those in distress into the early hours. If you’re looking for a way to make a difference and can spare a few hours a week, I would highly recommend training and volunteering with Shout. You’ll be making a big difference to the lives of so many, and no doubting saving many lives too.
A reminder that if you’re struggling to cope, you can text SHOUT to 85258 for free and confidential mental health support at any time, day or night. You are never alone 💜
