It is Friday afternoon here in Denmark, the weekend end is about to start and while a lot of Europe will be engrossed in football (and a lot of the world wont care), there will be some of us with domestic chores to do. In my particular case, it will be hedge clipping and gardening before the summer solstice, these type of chores are usually zen moments for me. I often use the time to reflect over the big issues that we are seeing in the industry, and arguably there have been none bigger in the offshore wind space than turning targets into turbines installed at sea in a healthy way for the industry. Vestas launched a brilliant campaign at WindEurope's event in Bilbao that targets aren't turbines (if you haven't seen the video you should check it out on vestas.com). So Rebecca Williams, the official new co-host of the #OffshoreWindPodcast taking over from David Lenti, and I sat down with one of the brains behind the campaign Wadia Fruergaard and we invited Anders Ystad from Equinor to join us at the desk to unpack some of the challenges that we see in the markets around the globe and look at some of the conditions that have caused some realignment of the market over the past 12 months. In 1991, the world’s first ever offshore wind farm was launched in Europe, off the coast of Vindeby, in Denmark. 30 years later, Europe is looking to expand offshore renewables even more. Swedish County Greenlights 2.5 GW Floating Wind Farm as Developer Agrees to Requested Modification The County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland has completed its review of the application for the 2.5 GW MARELD landskapsarkitekter AB floating offshore wind farm and recommended that the Swedish government approve the proposal after the developer agreed to the Board’s request to reduce the size of the wind farm area. Vidi Energy Group CEO Robert Speht welcomes this news from Sweden and comments: “It’s great that the developer has adjusted the floating wind farm to be able to coexist with other important societal interests such as fishing and shipping. Wind energy, particularly floating wind, can and should enhance the economy. Exciting times!” The project, developed by Freja Offshore, a 50-50 joint venture between Aker Horizons-owned Mainstream Renewable Power and Swedish company Hexicon, is proposed to be built about 40 kilometres west of Lysekil and is expected to deliver 12 TWh of electricity annually. Earlier this year, the joint venture also entered into a collaboration with the Norwegian company SubFarm to enable setting up fish farms inside the Mareld floating offshore wind farm. Freja Offshore submitted the planning application under the Swedish Economic Zone Act (SEZ) last year. The government had tasked the County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland with preparing the application, work which the County Administrative Board has now completed and returned with the recommendation that the wind farm should be approved, subject to certain adaptations. Namely, during the preparation process, the Board recommended Freja adjust the wind farm area size to ensure a sustainable co-existence with other important ocean users, such as commercial fishing and shipping. The developer has agreed to modify the project and is now waiting for the government’s final decision on the application. An exciting milestone yesterday, as I (and thousands of other Ripple Energy members) shifted from owning a small slice of a construction project to owning a small slice of an energised onshore wind farm ⚡⚡⚡. I really like Ripple's model, which enables anyone to directly contribute to the building of infrastructure needed for the energy transition. 💚 Happy Valentine's Day, dear friends! 😊 This week, we are happy that the nearly 80-meter #windturbine #blades of our Kelme wind farm in #lithuania have arrived #safely in the port of Klaipeda. From there we transport them to the #Kelme #windfarm . The transportation takes place at night to minimize disruptions. 🚢 🌍 To date, the wind turbine manufacturer Nordex Group has transported the turbine towers, blades and nacelles by ship from different parts of the world to the port of Klaipeda in Lithuania. "Kelme district is one of the #largest #regions of #renewableenergy development in #lithuania and the three-part Kelme wind farm will in turn be Enefit Green`s #largest #development . Western Lithuania is a suitable region for building wind farms thanks to its excellent wind conditions, sparse population and lack of restrictions arising from nature or national defense," explains Lauri Ulm, Head of Wind Energy at Enefit Green. 👉 Enefit Green will build the Kelme wind farm in Western Lithuania in three phases, the first of which will involve the installation of 14 wind turbines. Earlier this month, wind became the largest contributor to UK power generation. Today, the UK's largest community-owned energy project started feeding power into the grid. In a month, all 8 turbines will be operational, and together they'll displace almost 32,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, for the next 20-25 years. Global warming was predicted by science in the 19th century. Over a century later, we've reshaped the world to increasingly burn, starve, flood, and displace us, and all other life on earth. Onshore wind is the cheapest form of energy. Oxford University calculated that switching to renewables could save the world USD 12 trillion by 2050. The number of new wind farm projects in England last year? Zero. It's time to fall in love with the solutions we already have. There's no time to waste.

Floating offshore wind is finally here.

Norway and the EU Strengthen Energy Collaboration for a Sustainable Future!🌍 ⚡Elisabeth Sæther, State Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, participated at the EU's informal energy ministers' meeting in Brussels on April 15th, where energy infrastructure took center stage. 🔋Over the past years, Norway has focused on spearheading North Sea offshore wind initiatives, crafting a market for hydrogen, and notably, advancing carbon capture and storage as key aspects of the partnership with the EU. 🤝On April 15th, Norway signed a bilateral Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Sweden, paving the way for cross-border transport and storage of CO2.
