I feel there are some stories where humans leave such an impact on the people they meet that it creates a tidal wave of transformation and change. This is one such human; Portia. She is a former journalist-turned-educator who runs a free boarding school for the underprivileged in India’s highest village Komic. She provides food, shelter, clothing, and education to these tiny hearts in the mountainous, cold desert of Spiti Valley. She does this through her foundation, Planet Spiti. Have you heard about the #Dunbar's number - a theoretical cognitive limit to the number of people with whom one can maintain stable social relationships. This number is commonly cited as being around 150, suggesting there's a limit to the size of a network where each member can know every other person and how each person relates to every other person. There is a fundamental problem with humanity. #Dawkins had a crackpot theory about the so-called selfish gene - rather, it was the shift from nomadic to settlement where the complexity of the network grows exponentially. Plus, with repeated cycles of scarcity, it's not accurate to call it the selfish gene, but rather a maladapted trait. Fundamentally - it is the confluence and symbiosis of multiple technologies - decentralization (blockchain); but also AI-driven optimization which will produce collaborative solutions as most cost-effective; scale higher - we address the maladapted selfish trait. Plus, 4th industry technologies will allow better control and understanding of our networks. When it comes to the issue of ethical sourcing of #cobalt, it is a technical problem. While there are cobalt sourcing certification programs such as the Responsible Cobalt Initiative (RCI) - they are largely ineffective. Walmart Canada was successful in its enterprise application of #IoT, #RFID, and #blockchain to streamline its supply chain; and we can build on Walmart’s innovation to improve #traceability and #transparency of our supply chains. It's also a #governance issue - where corruption in local government structures can exacerbate the challenges of ensuring ethical cobalt sourcing. Second is a regulatory challenge. Europe is pushing to ensure a certain % of recycled material is used in EV car production. While Apple has committed to use 100% recycled cobalt in all Apple-designed batteries by 2025. The European Union also has ambitious goals of moving towards the use of 100% recycled cobalt. However - that requires addressing significant legislative, technological, supply chain, and governance challenges. Researchers and companies are exploring alternative battery chemistries that reduce or eliminate the need for cobalt, such as lithium iron phosphate (#LFP) batteries, to mitigate supply risks and ethical concerns. Here, Artificial Intelligence should accelerate finding alternatives. There is an immediate issue of child labor - the cost is significant because it strips away the #future of these #children but as well of the #DRC as well.

Our Program Associates are currently engaged in a crucial initiative to conduct vulnerability mapping in various blocks of Bahraich and Shravasti. The primary focus of this mapping exercise is to identify children and families who are vulnerable to child trafficking and child labor. The aim of this exercise is twofold. Firstly, it aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of the vulnerabilities faced by these families. This includes factors such as lack of access to education and other socio-economic challenges that contribute to their vulnerability. By understanding these factors, we can better address the root causes of child trafficking and child labor in these areas. Secondly, the mapping exercise will later merge into an exercise of connecting these families and children with different government schemes and programs. These schemes aim to provide support and opportunities for a brighter, more sustainable future. We hope to facilitate the empowerment process for them to break the cycle of vulnerability.
