Hope to see more companies with circular production at biggest textile event Bharat Tex According to a 2022 report Circular Economy in Municipal Solid and Liquid Waste by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, of the total 47,860.15 tonnes per day of dry waste generated from municipal sources in 2021, textiles accounted for a significant 15 per cent, the third largest dry waste stream after plastics (45 per cent) and paper / cardboard (21 per cent). However, only a mere 30 per cent was recovered, highlighting the massive gap in waste management. Bengaluru's Hasiru Batte is helping tackle landfill and improving conditions for informal waste workers by collecting post-consumer textile waste to be recycled as felt. An initiative of TRANSFORM social impact organisation Hasiru Dala, they piloted a successful collection scheme last August and have partnered with Netherlands-based The Good Felt, which aims to divert 5,000 tonnes of textile waste from going to landfill in the next five years. Why felt? As CEO of The Good Felt Club Anurag Jain told The Hindu, the material “stands out as one of the most versatile yet underrated materials in the textile industry”. It demands minimal infrastructure, is highly recyclable, and operates within a completely circular system. “The aim is to find a solution to the large volume of textile waste that goes into landfills and poor work and living conditions of waste collectors in India. Examples of how data is manipulated and fabricated but we believe wherever, whoever, and whenever publish it. In 2012, we conducted a study for the quantification and characterization of municipal solid waste (MSW) in 58 municipalities. The report was published by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 2013. According to the report, "The total MSW generation of the 58 municipalities was estimated at about 1,435 tons/day ....... In aggregate, MSW is composed of 56% organic..., 16% plastics, and ...". That means the average daily plastic waste production at 58 municipalities was 229.6 tons in 2012. Based on the same report though is not cited, data published in an opinion article in one of the national English Daily newspapers in 2016 is as follows; “Studies show that about 16 percent of urban waste in Nepal is comprised of plastic materials. India leads in generating plastic waste with 10.2 mn tonnes a year: Study. That's a BAD News. The Good News is that our company M/s Unified Intelligence Pvt Ltd have a solution to this menace. We collect the MLP wastes (covers of pan parag, potato chips, biscuits, chocolates... almost every packaged food product wrappers) shred it, wash it, make 8'X4' sheets, use 3 of them to build sandwiched honeycomb structure design construction panels, and build homes. Each panel has a load bearing capacity of nearly 18 tonnes. Cement boards pasted on either sides of the panel provides ready to paint surface - apart from the fire protection. The panels are factory fitted with concealed plumbing pipelines and Electrical conduits. As the sun rises, its rays permeate heat through convection process on the surface of outer walls. This warms the air inside honeycomb grooves in our panel. Hot air travels upwards inside the panels. The air path within the honeycomb in the panels are designed to evacuate rising warm air through a contraption provided near the roof. Thus the homes built with these panels are always cooler without air -conditioning. An entire home in the form of panels are loaded in a single truck, taken to the site. These panels come together- mounted on a concrete platform and joined together to form walls and roof of the house. Doors and windows of any material can be fixed on these panels. The 2BHK 440 sqft house shown below was constructed in 7 days in Kanyakumari. Heavy showers could not slow us down. This is quite impossible with conventional cement and brick construction methods. MLP wastes are no -recyclable -so we found a method to store it. Homes made from our panels have a life of over 50 years. The cost too is competitive. It is time for the World to adopt innovative solutions in construction methods. This small house was able to store 4 tons of ocean bound plastic waste and help prevent it from polluting the earth. As per the report below India generates 10.2 Million tonnes of plastic waste in a year. TEXTILE WASTE MANAGAMENT MANDATORY FROM 2025 Kaaita worn-out slippers can be downcycled into so many exciting new products, like secondary textile fibres, textile filling material, cleaning cloths, and so on. We have found cool companies doing that, and they are spread throughout Europe as part of KAAITA RECYCLING NETWORK. https://lnkd.in/esEvRwbU Textile waste management is not only something nice, responsible businesses do – starting in 2025, it will be a mandatory practice, regulated by the EU legislature (Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles). The good news is that KAAITA partner hotels already have responsible options in place. BASIC OPTIONS Kaaita worn-out slippers should be treated as textile waste, as advised by official waste regulatory services in your country. This usually means the following options (actual offerings differ from country to country): 1) Put worn-out slippers in textile collection containers in your neighborhood (eligible for smaller quantities). 2) Dispose of them in the textile containers at any waste management plant near you. 3) Discuss textile waste collection with a waste partner you already use. When disposing please be aware of the material profile: Felt: 100% polyester (96% recycled and 4% virgin); Thread: 100% recycled Polyester; Textile label: Cotton/Polyester; Non-slip print on the soles: Silicon-based Eco-dry finishing. KAAITA RECYCLING NETWORK Kaaita partner hotels can join the Kaaita Recycling Network. Recycling partners offer a variety of options to downcycle old slippers into secondary textile fibers, textile filling material, cleaning cloths, etc. It is a lively list and will is regularly updated.
