For people in the #space business obvious but sometimes it’s important to share and be curious… I liked this question and answer on instagram by Airbus Space - Airbus Defence and Space How big is a #satellite ?🫣 We get this question quite often as a satellite is rarely seen with our own eyes. ~ Satellites come in all sizes, but here's one answer: A telecommunications satellite like the one shown here, EUTELSAT 36D, is approximately the size of a small truck (4m x 5m x 4m). They are rarely bigger, except for ambitious space missions like the Hubble or Webb telescopes. But with miniaturisation, they tend to be smaller and smaller every time! For example, the Sentinel-2 satellites measure 3.4m x 1.8m x 2,3m or the new generation of OneWeb satellites are only around 1 cubic metre It mainly depends on the satellite's mission, the number of instruments on board and the fuel needed to power it🛰️

The synergy between the space and automotive industries is accelerating, marking a pivotal shift in technological advancement and economic strategy. 🚀🚗 The space sector is embracing the mass production techniques that revolutionized the automotive industry, achieving economies of scale that disrupt traditional business models. This strategic adoption is not just about reducing costs; it's about making space more accessible and fostering innovation at a pace previously unimaginable. As we witness this transformation, the automotive industry is also poised for a significant evolution. The integration with space technologies is set to redefine the future of mobility. Imagine cars equipped with advanced navigation systems derived from aerospace technology, enhancing autonomous driving capabilities, and propelling the industry forward. This cross-pollination of ideas and technologies is not just a trend; it's the future. It's an invitation to think bigger, to innovate beyond boundaries, and to collaborate across sectors. Let's embrace this historic era of change! 👉 Discover the key success factors that can accelerate your revenue growth in Porsche Consulting's White Paper, "Race to Space." #SpaceIndustry #AutomotiveInnovation #Collaboration #FutureMobility
The history of the space industry is littered with spectacular failures, while satellites are expensive and regulation is complex. 🚀 Setting up a successful service is a formidable challenge. Time-to-market is measured in years and fraught with frequent additional delays. Once satellites are in space, they are in an unforbidding environment. Some satellites simply never work as a result of quality issues, while others fail earlier than planned for a multi-year service life. The economics of costs and revenue potentials are also currently changing dramatically, with future success much more likely. To give space companies a rough guideline for increasing the odds of success for their prospective services, Porsche Consulting has identified 18 success factors that focus on the revenue potential as well as on the service costs. Space Force Preps "Space Mechanic" Launch for 2026. The Space Force is teaming up with Starfish Space to test the world's first satellite servicing mission in 2026. Nicknamed "Otter," this "space mechanic" will refuel, repair, and move existing satellites, extending their missions and boosting US space capabilities. This project combines Starfish's satellite servicing expertise with the Space Force's mission needs. Space Systems Command (SSC) invested $37.5 million to develop and deploy Otter. What Otter Can Do: Auto-docking: Otter can autonomously find and dock with existing satellites, regardless of their design. Multitasking Mechanic: From extending lifespan to maneuvering satellites, Otter offers a versatile toolbox for on-orbit maintenance. Building on Innovation: Starfish previously launched "Otter Pup" in 2023, but its launch vehicle encountered issues. They plan another launch in 2025 to refine their technology. The Future of Space Logistics: This project aligns with the Space Force's Space Access, Mobility and Logistics (SAML) initiative, exploring commercial options for servicing military satellites. Understanding the commercial viability of SAML is key before full integration. A Step Towards a Stronger Space Presence: The 2026 mission is a big leap for on-orbit maintenance. It not only extends individual satellite life but strengthens the overall resilience and adaptability of US space infrastructure. #spacemechanics #satelliteservices #usspacestrategy #ottermission #orbitalgasstation
