As clinicians and helpers we must ask ourselves how can mental health providers, social workers, activists, academics, and case workers offer support to their clients in the face of such grave injustices inflicted upon their communities? How can we, particularly those of us who are not of black heritage, even begin to grasp the depths of pain and trauma endured over centuries, with no foreseeable end to such suffering? Our starting point must be to actively listen to our clients, genuinely hearing their needs, their paths to healing, and what may not foster their well-being. We must be present with our clients, creating a safe space for them to express their intense emotions, while also acknowledging our biases and knowledge gaps when it comes to understanding the enduring legacy of resilience forged through a history of anguish. I view all individuals as part of my own community, as my brothers and sisters. I firmly believe that collectively, we possess the capacity to uplift, empower, and amplify the voices of those who have been silenced, and to learn from our community members in order to serve them in the most effective way possible. As helpers, our responsibility lies with our clients. We must strive to decolonize our minds and challenge our education, while respectfully listening to and valuing the wisdom of our elders, believing and supporting women and children, and ensuring that each and every one of our clients receives the advocacy they deserve.
