Yesterday, the DEP SFD, a scaled version of a large passenger aircraft with distributed electric propulsion undertook its maiden flight! 📣 ✈ The flight, on the 2nd of May 2024, was at Aeroporto di Taranto-Grottaglie in the south of Italy. The aircraft with a wingspan of 4 metres, a take-off mass of 167 kg, and a cruise speed of 100 knots, took off, completed a 10-minute flight, including an approach just over the runway, and landed successfully. Subsequent flights will aim to qualify the aircraft for measurement flights, during which dynamic manoeuvres will be executed. Through these efforts, we shall learn about the feasibility to harvest the benefits of Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP) technology for large passenger aircraft. As part of a hybrid configuration the distributed electric propulsion will reduce the energy needed for aircraft operations. This contributes to the objective of the Clean Sky 2 programme of the European Commission in which Airbus, ONERA - The French Aerospace Lab, CIRA - Italian Aerospace Research Centre, TU Delft | Aerospace Engineering, Orange Aerospace- and NLR collaborate for this activity. 🎥 The video below shows the first raw footage from the tail-mounted camera. On 2 May a scaled version of a large passenger aircraft with distributed electric propulsion made its first maiden flight at the Aeroporto di Taranto-Grottaglie in Italy. Researchers of our Flight Performance and Propulsion Group, including Maurice Hoogreef, Malcom Brown and Leo Veldhuis as well as our former colleague Nando van Arnhem, worked on its propeller design and wing integration. The aircraft with a wingspan of 4 metres, a take-off mass of 167 kg, and a cruise speed of 100 knots, took off, completed a 10-minute flight, including an approach just over the runway, and landed successfully. More flights are scheduled to qualify the aircraft for measurement flights, during which it will carry out dynamic manoeuvres. This will make it possible to learn more about the feasibility of Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP) technology for large passenger aircraft. As part of a hybrid configuration DEP technology can reduce the energy consumption of an aircraft. After a first flight in May another 26 flights were flown at Aeroporti di Puglia in Grottaglie (Italy), with our scaled version of a large passenger aircraft with distributed electric propulsion. 📽 ✈ The dynamics of the aircraft was measured and two control algorithms using asymmetric thrust were tested. Part of the manoeuvres were flown with the remote human pilot in the ground station controlling the aircraft with control surfaces and through differential thrust (meaning the motors on the left and the right side have different rotation speed). We learned a lot about the technology! 🚀 Updates from the Aerospace Industry! 🛰️ I recently had the privilege of contributing to WAMS24 (NASA-ESA) and participating to the iQ Additive Manufacturing for Aerospace, Defence and Space Conference in Bristol. The discussions were shedding light on the current landscape of AM metal parts in aerospace and the challenges we face in realizing their full potential. Despite advancements, the proliferation of metal parts in commercial aviation remains underwhelming. One persistent obstacle continues to be the costs and delays associated to quality control and part qualification. There's reason for optimism though: we're witnessing remarkable progress in the "probabilistic" certification of parts, driven by monitoring data and machine learning. This innovative approach offers a promising alternative to traditional NDT-based certification. Regulatory bodies are showing increased openness to these methods, although further persuasion is needed, as outlined in the recent discussions on the 5-year plan. Yet, the journey doesn't end here: more time will be needed to have the complex methodologies pioneered by Tier 1 companies eventually migrate to manufacturing firms, as the former typically do not engage in part production. Therefore, there's still much work ahead to realize the sales potential of aviation metal AM parts that justifies the investments of the past decade. Finite Pointset Method in aircraft simulations at VPS User Conference 2024 ✈ Last week, the VPS User Conference 2024 was held in Prague, organized by ESI Group. On the second day, our institute participated in the #aerospace session with the presentation "FPM Liquid for Fluid Structure Interaction in Aeronautics: Ditching, Floatation, Fuel Sloshing". In this presentation the recent progress in using the Finite Pointset Method for realistic #simulation of transient interactions between incompressible fluids (water, liquid hydrogen) and aeronautical structures are presented.
