😎 Very cool development this week! ⚡ One of the benefits of electric-powered propellers providing the aircraft propulsion, is that those propellers (or fans) can be distributed along the aircraft wing, potentially enabling higher aerodynamic efficiency wing designs. 🤓 While interesting in theory, it will be more difficult in practice to develop and certify these aircraft concepts - with their novel behaviour and failure modes. 👨🔬 That's why testing like this is exciting 🤩 (While remaining realistic about the potential of electric-powered aircraft to displace most jet-powered airliners any time soon)
Yesterday, the DEP SFD, a scaled version of a large passenger aircraft with distributed electric propulsion undertook its maiden flight! 📣 ✈ The flight, on the 2nd of May 2024, was at Aeroporto di Taranto-Grottaglie in the south of Italy. The aircraft with a wingspan of 4 metres, a take-off mass of 167 kg, and a cruise speed of 100 knots, took off, completed a 10-minute flight, including an approach just over the runway, and landed successfully. Subsequent flights will aim to qualify the aircraft for measurement flights, during which dynamic manoeuvres will be executed. Through these efforts, we shall learn about the feasibility to harvest the benefits of Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP) technology for large passenger aircraft. As part of a hybrid configuration the distributed electric propulsion will reduce the energy needed for aircraft operations. This contributes to the objective of the Clean Sky 2 programme of the European Commission in which Airbus, ONERA - The French Aerospace Lab, CIRA - Italian Aerospace Research Centre, TU Delft | Aerospace Engineering, Orange Aerospace- and NLR collaborate for this activity. 🎥 The video below shows the first raw footage from the tail-mounted camera.
