Up until 20 years ago, Underwater Radiated Noise #URN was a topic of exclusive military interest. More recently, the scientific community has highlighted potential negative effects on the marine environment because it provokes direct harm to a wide range of marine wildlife and it compromises their communication. Based on the emerging issue of these effects on the #marineecosystem, IMO and classification societies issued the first guidelines defining good practices and gradually introduced additional class notations. Our CEO, Massimo Debenedetti addressed the topic comprehensively at the XIV Trans-Regional Seapower Symposium “A spotlight on the depths: the Underwater as the new frontier for humankind” organized by Marina Militare that took place this morning in Venice. He outlined the central role CETENA has played in the several research initiatives on the topic of URN that the EU has funded over the past 15 years. CETENA’s role has primarily involved the study and #numericalmodeling of the main sources of URN (e.g. onboard machinery, cavitating propeller etc.) and the experimental characterization of underwater #acousticemissions, contributing to international technological advancements in this area. The numerical models used by CETENA have been validated at every step of their development, and the methodologies adopted are constantly refined through comparison with the extensive real-world data CETENA possesses. #Cetena #Fincantieri #FutureOnBoard #MMI #URN #Underwater #Innovation

The 11th Nautical Information Provision Working Group (NIPWG) meeting, held last week in Gdynia, Poland, was a success! Hosted by the Hydrographic Office of the Polish Navy, members and participants shared their experiences in testing new S-100-based products and data services, as well as evaluating their interoperability. During the review, progress on action items was assessed to ensure readiness for the S-100 ECDIS. This technical evolution of the established navigation tool will help to further enhance marine safety and efficiency by providing a much wider range of #marine #geodata which will be partly able to be updated in near real-time. The implementation is set to begin in 2026. The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will come together on a future occasion to explore the potential of the S-100 ECDIS. With an update on the development of the “Guidelines for Harmonized Communication and Electronic Exchange of Nautical Data for Port Calls”, provided by the IHMA - International Harbour Masters Association representative, the NIPWG members also addressed secured data exchange mechanisms for #InternetProtocol-based ship to shore communication. A highlight of the meeting was the all-new digital Catalogue of Nautical Products S-128, which is on the right track for submission to the approval of IHO Member States. Participants from 15 Member States, along with members of the IMO Expert Group on Data Harmonization, IHMA, ProtectedSeas, and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) attended the meeting. NIPWG is responsible for the transition of Nautical Publications from paper format to the Universal Hydrographic Data Model S-100 digital framework. These Nautical Publications play a crucial role in near-shore navigation and harbour approaches. NIPWG has developed several new S-100 Product Specifications to support the next generation of Electronic Navigation Data Services (ENDS) for mariners – the fuel for S-100 ECDIS. Chaired by Eivind Mong from the Canadian Coast Guard/Garde côtière canadienne. #NIPWG #NauticalInformation #Hydrography #S100 #ElectronicNavigation #ECDIS #MaritimeSafety #PortCalls #DataExchange #IMO #HydrographicData #NauticalPublications #MaritimeInnovation #NavigationTechnology #SOLAS #Seafaring #DigitalTransformation #MarineData

As a professional observer, it is important to note that it is quite common to experience loss of GPS data due to "jamming" and "spoofing," particularly when encountering "jamming" equipment near naval vessels. In such situations, I recommend employing dead reckoning, PI navigation on Radar, and, for precise navigation or controlling units, considering the implementation of R-Mode Navigation. Developed by German Aerospace Center (DLR) , R-Mode Navigation has proven its effectiveness on multiple vessels in the Baltic Sea. The technology utilizes two types of widely available broadcast signals for maritime shore infrastructure. The project documentation encompasses the design of R-Mode signals for two communication systems, digital signal processing approaches, and positioning methods using R-Mode signals. Furthermore, it presents the outcomes of successful R-Mode tests conducted in the port of Gdynia, the Baltic Sea, and Germany. These documents address challenges and solutions related to R-Mode and serve as a valuable resource for maritime service providers, navigation equipment manufacturers, ship owners, pilots, and nautical personnel.
