Mapping the physics and features of the ocean
About us
The IHO is an intergovernmental organization which works to ensure all the physics and features of the oceans are measured and charted. This includes sea level, topography of the seabed (mountains, volcanoes, ravines…), bathymetry (depth) currents, etc. This information supports all marine activities including navigation, scientific research, environmental protection, and the development of the Blue Economy. With 98 Member States across five continents, the IHO sets standards and coordinates activities of national hydrographic offices so that all oceans, coastal areas, lakes and rivers are surveyed and charted. Information related to the topography of the seabed or the strength and regularity of currents for example can be used to develop marine renewable energy projects. Environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, and currents can be used by industries like fishing and aquaculture to optimize their activities. Plus, the marine environment is changing. In some parts of the world sea level is rising, ice is melting, coasts are eroding etc. Hydrography provides baseline data to measure and monitor these changes. The IHO was established in 1921.

The identification of #boulders in #sonar #data is important for a wide range of navigational, environmental, economic and marine planning applications. In this context, the use of #neural #networks for the automatic detection of boulders on the #seabed shows great potential. Although it has been shown that #artificial #intelligence is capable of performing the task in a rapid and consistent manner, previous research has not advanced beyond the stage of scientific experimentation. The latest issue of The International Hydrographic Review (#IHR) features the work from Matthias Hinz and Patrick Westfeld (Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency)), Peter Feldens and Svenja Papenmeier (Leibniz-Institut für Ostseeforschung Warnemünde) as well as Agata Feldens and Sören Themann (Subsea Europe Services) bridging the gap from experimentation to application. The paper presents a workflow implemented in a versatile hydrographic object detection software for fully automated boulder detection in #acoustic #backscatter and #slope imagery as well as pure #3D #point from #side-#scan sonar and #multibeam #echosounder data. The findings from the #Baltic #Sea testcase highlight the potential of #AI in the field of #hydrography. 📌 Read and download this article from https://lnkd.in/d6VQS-Ws 📌 You can view the full issue of IHR with interesting articles and notes on hydrography and other topics at https://lnkd.in/dCEgN7by 💡 Are you interested in contributing to IHR, an international scientific journal that publishes open access peer-reviewed papers on all aspects of hydrography and related topics? Last week the IHO participated in the 51st session of the Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP) at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) #Marine #Environment Laboratories in Monaco. Key topics included: ✅Evaluation of harmful substances carried by #ships ✅Active substances used in ballast water management systems ✅#Ocean interventions for climate change mitigation ✅Sea-based sources of marine litter ✅Biofouling management ✅Climate change and greenhouse gas-related impacts on contaminants in the ocean. #Hydrography can play a vital role by providing insight into ocean currents and the shape of the #seabed which impact the movement of pollutants. These perspectives will also help the IHO understand how hydrography and other related disciplines can contribute to addressing these critical issues in order to support safe and #sustainable #navigation. GESAMP is an advisory body that provides scientific guidance on marine environmental protection. This year, the discussions were led by the International Maritime Organization, the World Meteorological Organization, UNESCO Ocean, the UN Environment Programme, the FAO, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) was represented by its Technical Director, John Nyberg, PhD. #MarineProtection #OceanScience #ClimateAction #MarineEnvironment #SustainableOceans #Hydrography #OceanConservation #GESAMP

The 16th meeting of the Worldwide Navigational Warning Service (WWNWS) Sub-Committee is currently taking place in Valparaiso, Chile, hosted by SHOA during the 150th year anniversary of their establishment in 1874. 📌 Topics being addressed include #Maritime Safety Information, reviewing the different broadcast systems and services, developments in the WWNWS and the Global Maritime Distress and #Safety System, but also space. Participants are discussing ways to improve seafarer response to space activity #navigational warnings, in particular as relates to very large space debris areas. They are also looking at how to provide clearer guidance on the issuance of space weather warnings. Space weather, a consequence of the behaviour of the Sun and the nature of its interaction with the Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere, can have severe effects on the Earth, including interruptions to radio communications and Global Navigational Satellite Systems (GNSS). Some administrations have access to Space Weather Prediction Services, but this is not the case for every #maritimesafety information provider (MSIP) and the information is not presented in a uniform manner.

The IHO continues its efforts to develop hydrographic skills around the world. Last week the IHO attended the graduation ceremony of the Category "A" Master’s Degree in Hydrographic Science - now in its 25th year - and Category "B" Bachelor in Marine Science (#Hydrography) at The University of Southern Mississippi. The graduates in the Category "A" Master’s in Hydrographic Science Programme included two students from Mauritius and Türkiye as part of the IHO-Republic of Korea (ROK) Programme of Technical Cooperation. This programme, which began in 2013, provides financial support for students to attend the course and is a key part of the IHO #CapacityBuilding Programme which aims to develop hydrographic expertise in Member States. As a sign of the importance of this work, First Secretary Mr Jong Wook Choi from the ROK Embassy in the USA attended and praised the collaboration of the three organizations (ROK, IHO and USM) behind the Category “A” Master of Science in Hydrographic Science and how it contributes to the safety of #navigation and the conservation and use of the #oceans. In his remarks, IHO Director Luigi Sinapi highlighted how the marine and maritime domains are in the midst of radical changes which will propel navigation forward and open a realm of new possibilities, where hydrographers will have a central role in facilitating the digital representation of the ocean. This will include an increase of #autonomous sea operations requiring machine-to-machine #data exchange and automated decision-making, and a new standardized and real-time approach to safety of navigation, through the use of new products and services under the framework of the Universal Hydrographic Data Model S-100, which will be operational in 2026.
