Life bucket list item? Bringing my research full circle? Finalizing a chapter? Capstone moment? Whatever you want to call it, this achievement is a big one for me that reflects a lot of hard work, dedication, and pride. Last week the research I conducted while in graduate school was officially published in the scientific journal, Minerals. My co-authors and I were invited to submit a manuscript discussing our research and findings in a special issue called Advances in Serpentinization. Time to frame the first page and hang it next to my desk 😊 You can read our article by navigating to MDPI’s website and searching my name in the author field… or you can just use the QR code below 😉 #UniversityofMaine #Minerals #Published #FirstAuthorStatus #DreamBig

Brazilian Critical Minerals Limited: The greenest rare earths mine of the future, now. Set for rapid growth, Brazilian Critical Minerals is well positioned to benefit from nine large REE-focused tenements near Apuí Town. Rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 17 chemically similar elements that are crucial to modern technology and the global economy. Despite their name, these elements are relatively abundant in the Earth’s crust, but they are rarely found in concentrated forms, making their extraction and refinement both challenging and costly. The unique chemical and physical properties of REEs make them indispensable in a wide range of applications, from advanced electronics and renewable energy technologies to defence systems and medical devices. Critical and strategic raw materials are vital for economic and technological development, key to innovation and growth in high-tech industries and critical for the transition to a low-carbon circular, rather than linear, economy, in Europe. GSEU authors working on critical raw minerals have published a paper entitled "Unlocking the Secondary Critical Raw Material Potential of Historical Mine Sites, Lousal Mine, Southern Portugal" which addresses these needs. 🌟 Exciting Progress in Mineral Processing! 🌟 Dr. Liza Forbes, Associate Professor at the The University of Queensland Sustainable Minerals Institute, is tackling a significant challenge in mineral processing. Her focus? Separating pyrite, commonly known as 'fool’s gold', from copper-bearing minerals to enhance base metal recovery and reduce tailings. Pyrite poses persistent issues in base metal processing operations like copper, lead, and zinc. According to Dr. Forbes, "Pyrite's omnipresence makes it a major hurdle, affecting metal recoveries and concentrate quality, impacting smelting operations." Her research, supported by a $300,000 Advance Queensland Industry Research Fellowship, aims to find effective solutions. Collaborating with Glencore Australia at their Mount Isa Copper Operation, Dr. Forbes has made promising strides in understanding the problem.
