Willkommen am #HZDR Dr. Martin Keller! Heute besuchte der Direktor des National Renewable Energy Laboratory, des wichtigsten Labors der USA zur Erforschung erneuerbarer Energien, erstmals unser Forschungszentrum. Nach einer Begrüßung durch den Vorstand, Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt und Dr. Diana Stiller, sowie einem Eintrag ins Gästebuch, besichtige Keller zwei Großforschungsanlagen des Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). An der thermohydraulischen Versuchsanlage #TOPFLOW erkundigte er sich, wie unsere Forscher*innen komplexe Strömungsphänomene, wie sie in der Chemie- und Verfahrenstechnik vorkommen, unter realitätsnahen Bedingungen untersuchen. Anschließend unternahm er eine Führung durch das #ELBE-Zentrum für Hochleistungs-Strahlenquellen. Dort informierte er sich sowohl über die Funktionsweise der Anlage als auch über ihre verschiedenen Forschungszwecke von der #Materialwissenschaft bis zur #Medizin. Im Oktober vergagenen Jahres wurde Martin Keller zum neuen Präsidenten der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft gewählt. Seine Amtszeit beginnt im November 2025. Wir bedanken uns für den Besuch und freuen uns auf eine erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit!

Reading magnetic states faster – in far infrared: Researchers determine the magnetic orientation of a material using terahertz light Today, a single modern hard drive can store several million megabytes – providing enough #storage for hundreds of thousands of photos. These multi-terabyte hard drives rely on tiny magnetic structures. However, with data rates of only a few hundred megabytes per second, access to this digital information remains relatively slow. Initial experiments have already shown a promising new strategy: Magnetic states can be read out by short current pulses, whereby recently discovered #spintronic effects in purpose-built material systems could remove previous speed restrictions. Researchers at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and Technische Universität Dortmund are now providing proof of the feasibility of such ultrafast data sources. Instead of electrical pulses, they use ultrashort #terahertz light pulses, thereby enabling the read-out of magnetic structures within #picoseconds. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eT_2yGHT Image: B. 🌟 Celebrating International Women's Day with Inspiring Stories! On March 12, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) hosted a Career Dinner Talk that truly highlighted the power of women’s voices in the workplace and leadership roles. Four impressive women shared their career journeys, challenges, experiences, and triumphs, reminding us of the strength and value women bring to their professions. 💡 From overcoming obstacles to seizing opportunities, the panelists offered insights and lessons learned from their personal experience. One particularly striking statement came from Oda Keppler: “For women, the time in their lives when a career is possible coincides with family planning. Society would do well to continue creating opportunities to ensure that no woman gives up the desire to have children in favour of a leadership position.” Some further takeaways from the panelists: ✅ Women should not tell themselves they are too young for a leadership position. ✅ It’s typical for women to ask: Can I do this? But the real question is: Do I want this? ✅ If you aspire to a leadership role, say it out loud, repeatedly, and early on at every opportunity. As they report in the journal Communications Engineering, the new technology could transform use in clothing. From defect to high-tech material: Research team sheds light on nanosynthesis Cadmium selenide #nanoplatelets provide a promising foundation for the development of innovative electronic materials. Since the turn of the millennium, researchers around the world have taken a particular interest in these tiny platelets, which are only a few atoms thick, as they offer extraordinary optical and other properties. A team from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), Technische Universität Dresden, and the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW) has taken an important step towards the systematic production of such nanoplatelets. The researchers were able to gain fundamental insights into the interaction between structure and function, and highlight the role active #corners play, as they report.
