Project Update: WOW (Evidence-Based Practice) - Enriching Internships and Innovative Care Improvements This year, our advisory board WOW (Evidence-Based Practice) has conducted an impressive project where students from our learning care centers had the opportunity to make valuable contributions to nursing practice. During their internships, students were tasked with selecting a nursing issue in their department, conducting a thorough literature review, and presenting their findings in a Journal Club. Additionally, they developed an implementation plan to bring their findings into practice. Some of the notable contributions this year were: * Emergency Department: Students investigated the importance of counting respiratory rates and found that this is often inadequately performed. *Intensive Care Unit: Students assisted in developing a CAUTI bundle (Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection) which is already in use in the ICU. These projects not only contributed to improving our care practices but also provided students with a valuable learning opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in a clinical setting. The experiences and insights gained will be further developed and integrated into our care processes over the coming months and years. We would like to extend our gratitude to all involved: the members of our advisory board, the students, the internship mentors, and Thomas More-hogeschool for their dedication and collaboration. Together, we continue to strive for excellence in care through evidence-based practices.

Dear Nurse Intern [2] You can never know it all. Do not put too much pressure on yourself when you come across procedures you can’t carry out, questions you can’t answer, or complications you can’t manage. Remember, the one-year internship is an opportunity to improve at what you know and gain experience in areas you're unfamiliar with. Consistent practice breeds mastery. Don’t beat yourself up when you mess up a procedure the first time you try it; don’t shy away from it either. Do it scared until you’re able to do it like a pro. Don’t feel inadequate when you don’t have the answer to certain medical questions asked during your shift. Just ensure that the next time that same question arises, you have the right answer (always read up). Tip: Once you’re posted to a ward (e.g., renal ward), read up on major conditions treated in the ward, major medications used, and major procedures performed in that ward. Reading puts you a step ahead in terms of preparation. Ask questions when you’re confused. We deal with life, so never carry out a procedure you’re not 100% sure of. If you need to do it under supervision, please get someone to supervise (preferably a senior nurse). Always remember, "Repetition creates the master." - Cesar Millan. Leadership Lessons from the Emergency Room Welcome to July! (It's July 1. Do you know where your interns are?!) So, we're halfway through the year: how are you doing on your 2024 goals? Personal goals, professional goals. For those you support, how are they doing on their goals? Not just the professional/work goals which are easy to determine (maybe you set them, maybe you go over them in their regular reviews), but their personal goals as well? Not everyone wants to be an EMT, ER tech, RN, unit coordinator, FF/P, or whatever else. Maybe they want to become a Chief, a doctor, a NP, a PA, or even leave the first responder/medical field and go into business, write a book. What are you doing to support those goals? I've written a ton of LOR for medical school, PA school, nursing school; if someone wants to begin a career in the trades, I'd be thrilled to write that letter and provide a recommendation as well. I'll be the first in line to buy their book. Why? Because my job is to support others in reaching their goals. How do I know their goals? I ask. Two questions I got comfortable asking intern year to nurses: "What do other doctors usually do?" "What do you think we should do?" My most feared response: "I don't know. I'm new too." 😨 Interns, everyone knows you're learning. Including nurses. Be comfortable asking them for help. It'll make your year much easier. In fact, as a PGY-9, I still ask nurses if they have any thoughts or ideas on patients. Everyone is a part of the care team. Everyone has unique experiences and their own unique angle on things. Tap into it.

Presenting my recent work 🤓 : “Exploring Psychological Safety experiences of PostGraduate Nursing students in Immersive Simulation - An Action Research Study”

In preparation for my Final Practicum Presentation, I found this relatable: 📄 The Life of a Nursing Student: Documentation vs. DNP Paper 🎓 👩⚕️ How I Document a Patient Fall: "Patient A.B., a 72-year-old female with a history of falls, ambulated to the bedside unassisted; per the patient, she tripped and fell. No visible injuries, mild pain to right hip." 📚 How I Write My DNP Paper: "In this scholarly exploration, it is pertinent to elucidate the incident involving Ms. A.B., a septuagenarian female with a recurrent propensity for gravitational challenges (A.B., 72, personal communication, November 2023). Upon engaging in an unaided perambulation towards her bedside, Ms. A.B. experienced an unforeseen descent to the terrestrial plane, resulting in minimal physical manifestations but a reported discomfort localized in the right coxal region (A.B., 72, personal communication, November 2023)."
