The Midwifery Model of Care is a wellness-based approach. It sees pregnancy as a normal, healthy process. Birth – while unpredictable – is best left to unfold with as little intervention as possible. Most significantly, midwives see birthing persons as equal partners in their care. Informed consent is paramount. The Midwifery Model of Care encourages watchful waiting and minimal intervention during birth. A good midwife knows how to use her hands for skilled care when necessary, and perhaps more importantly, when to sit on them. The focus is on the person giving birth, not on the technology. When intervention is necessary, they use an evidence-based approach. Midwives generally pass on practices that don’t improving outcomes. article by : silver spring doula Fakeeh University Hospital

Thank you for your leadership Governor Healey. According to the CDC, “Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women. Multiple factors contribute to these disparities, such as variation in quality healthcare, underlying chronic conditions, structural racism, and implicit bias.” Here’s one of the many reasons why this act is so important: “By hiring a doula, families receive valuable support during childbirth, resulting in improved birth outcomes and cost-effectiveness, making it a safe and worthwhile investment. Doula services have been shown to positively impact the social determinants of health, support birth equity, and decrease existing health and racial disparities. Women with doula care have a 22% lower risk of preterm birth, according to a 2016 study from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.” Source: https://lnkd.in/eucq78JK.
Today, Governor Maura Healey signed An Act promoting access to midwifery care and out-of-hospital birth options. This comprehensive legislation will overhaul maternal health practices in Massachusetts and expand coverage for midwifery, birth centers, doulas and screening and treatment for postpartum depression, among several other initiatives to save lives. Thanks to the tireless researchers, what midwives and their patients have known all along is now evidence informed. The next question we need to answer is: why is the midwifery model underfunded and overcontrolled, and why are there are so few midwives included in the system disruption conversations that are having a moment right now?
People receiving midwifery care have fewer emergency room visits - these are the findings of new research by Carla SORBARA, Liz Darling et al in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Thanks to Rachael Robertson for covering this midwifery-led research and its findings in Medpage.

#grrf Special Day Update 5 May- International Day of the Midwife Since 1992, International Midwives’ Day has been held on May 5. This day is observed to honor midwives’ work and promote awareness about their importance in providing crucial care to mothers and their new-borns. In addition, it is a chance for us to recognize their efforts towards making the world a better place. Midwifery is defined as skilled, competent, and loving care for pregnant females, newborn babies, and families throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and the early weeks of the child’s life. Optimizing basic biological, psychological, and sociocultural processes of birth; prompt mitigation and management of risks and intervention through referring patients to other services are some of the core characteristics. Other characteristics include respecting their wards’ unique views and circumstances and encouraging them to take proper care of themselves and the family. On International Midwives’ Day, we celebrate midwives’ exceptional contributions to humankind while also emphasizing the accumulating statistics and proof that midwifery is a crucial component of healthcare. Happy International Day of the Midwife! #grrf #health #midwife #humanity #mankind #healthcare #mother #newborns #people

WHAT IS SAFE COMPLEMENTARY THERAPY PRACTICE IN MIDWIFERY CARE? The NMC Code emphasises the need for safe practice and the RCM believes “safety is intrinsic to maternity care and works as the golden thread in everything we do.” Current concerns about the maternity services focus largely on the risks of low staffing levels, but there is more to safe practice than having enough midwives. Research evidence is often used to attempt to underpin practice and to formulate NICE guidelines, but formal evidence is not the only requirement for safe practice. Midwives’ enthusiasm for using CTs is at an all-time high, perhaps to offset defensive interventionist obstetrics and paper over the cracks of the risk impact of overworked midwives. Denise will be repeating her online session for midwifery managers, consultant midwives and educators on MANAGERS’ RESPONSIBILITIES WHEN MIDWIVES USE AROMATHERAPY on Wednesday 6thMarch at 1000 – 1100 hours. That’s why Maternity Foundation builds midwifery knowledge and skills among healthcare professionals in low resource settings where most maternal and newborn deaths happen. So far, we have reached 400,000 but the needs are much greater. Join us in advancing maternal and newborn health globally 👉 maternity.dk It should not cost life to give life.
