In recognition of Earth Month, our sustainability-focused Associate Resource Group, Sustainable OFFerings, hosted two exciting events to convene our associates and celebrate our planet. The festivities kicked off with an inspiring conversation with Julie Mastrarrigo, Managing Director of remake.world. Julie shared the importance of sustainable fashion concepts and offered practical advice and resources to help associates kick start their journey towards a more sustainable wardrobe and lifestyle. Associates were also invited to attend a planting party, where they created their own green masterpieces using a variety of flowers and herbs. Thank you to Sustainable OFFerings for your efforts to help associates foster sustainable habits and for bringing these events to life!

It was an honor to attend The Explorers Club's Climate Week event, “Moving Beyond Fashion's Waste to Protect Nature,” with Isabella Hershey. Listening to Samina Virk, Arshiya Lal, and Elizabeth (Liz) Ricketts discuss the future of sustainability across the fashion value chain was incredibly engaging and inspiring. With production levels still on the rise, it’s easy to think that sustainable fashion is an oxymoron. However, the insights shared on this panel started to give me a bit of hope. Now, more than ever, leaders need to have open conversations about what real change looks like. Utilizing sustainable and ethically sourced raw materials, reducing production, and providing greater transparency to consumers are essential steps forward. These discussions are just the beginning, and I look forward to seeing how the industry moves forward from here…

So very happy to see this work published! The Fashion Nature Risk Lens (a global, subnational estimate of land-use and #biodiversity and #deforestation risk for textiles) and The Fashion Strategy Tool Navigator occupied much of my thoughts and hours for nearly two years. It's so great to look back on it, and I'm particularly excited to hear how companies are using these tools today. Here are some tips for using the Fashion Nature Risk Lens: 🌳 Textile production, especially for #leather and #viscose is linked to deforestation. Use the maps to view how material production overlaps with WWF's #deforestation hotspots. This can give you an early idea of risk areas in your value chain, supporting early screening as part of initial preparation for upcoming sustainability legislations such as #EUDR and #CSRD, for example. As research and data on production and supply chain improves, you can replace these with more granular and company-specific datasets. 🎯 Land-use and land-use change is globally the biggest driver of biodiversity loss, and the fashion sector uses a lot of it! The Nature Risk Lens estimates that half of all agricultural land (2.4 billion hectares) is some way connected to fashion material production. When discounting co-products like meat and dairy, that reduces to 290 million hectares- an area greater than the size of Argentina. This gives an idea of the fashion sector's proportionate responsibility for supporting global nature protection and restoration, for example as part of the #GlobalBiodiversityFramework goals. 🗺 Use the subnational #landuse estimates and biodiversity risk layers (#STAR) to understand how these are expected to vary globally. This can give you an idea of where to prioritise implementation of regenerative agriculture targets, for example It was such a huge pleasure to work with Conservation International, The Fashion Pact, The Biodiversity Consultancy Ltd, Stephanie Harris, Vineet Katariya, Jamie Graham and Joe Turner on this work and I can't wait to see how the fashion sector continues to rise to the challenge of #naturepositive. What the food is Clim-Eat doing in fashion?🤔 As you may know, #food and #fashion overlap when it comes to sustainability. Central themes like circularity, traceability, and innovation repeat themselves for both. Food and Fashion are not, then, just expressions of style and taste but also symbiotic symbols for environmental stewardship and social responsibility. In their pursuit of sustainability, either can learn from the other what works, what doesn't, and where we can join forces. With that, we are absolutely delighted to officially announce our Forward Food & Fashion event taking place during New York Climate Week on September 26th! 🎉 In collaboration with Barnard College and Columbia Climate School, this event will convene those fighting for a better tomorrow from each sector, bridging the gap between the aisles. Fighting for the climate in each of our corners won't cut it; it's time to come together. Are you interested in sustainable food and fashion? This event is open to the public! So, #savethedate and stay tuned for more 👀

Activating creativity for climate solutions Founder & CEO of Creatives for Climate University of Auckland 40 Under 40
I've started working in sustainable fashion again - more on that soon... But this quote from Alec Leach's Substack hit me hard this week "No major brand has been able to meaningfully reduce its impact on the planet, despite decades of talk on sustainability. The truth is that fashion is built on a fundamentally unsustainable supply chain, and that there’s no incentive for anyone to be the good guy. Nobody makes more money by reducing their carbon footprint, and the few brands that are doing the work don’t get a meaningful advantage from it. The industry will only be sustainable when reduced emissions, less waste and responsible chemical management are built into the system — anything less than that won't move things forward. It’s the system itself that’s the problem, not this or that brand. That’s why all the pledges, green collections and upcycled whatever have added up to…basically nothing. “ This is literally what 'radicalized me' and prompted me to build Creatives for Climate - to create anti-greenwashing trainings, to run collective action campaigns, to call out brands BS and empower creative talent to walk away from polluting careers. Ugh, I hope something has changed. It's interesting working on the 'inside' again. More soon... 👀 👚

This year's motto for World Environment Day by UN Environment Programme: "We cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils. We are the generation that can make peace with land." 💚 At Retraced, we're dedicated to doing our (small) part for the environment by supporting fashion brands and suppliers in creating sustainable supply chains. Through transparency and collaboration, we help brands make more informed decisions and adopt eco-friendly practices. Together, we aim to make the fashion industry more sustainable, step by step.
