Have you ever wondered what happens to solar energy once it’s captured? Or what happens at nighttime or on a stormy day? While the sun provides an abundant source of clean energy, this energy needs to be immediately used or stored in large batteries. That’s where large-scale battery storage systems come into play. In 2022, Salt River Project announced two new contracts to add more battery storage to our power system, which will bring our total battery storage to more than 1,100 MW by 2024.

An interesting comment by Rod Welford on quite a good article by www.thefifthestate.com.au Rod says “Our main utility companies are still proceeding on the basis that THEY are the energy suppliers and the centralised grid the the mainstay of the system just like the 'old' days.” I checked to see if Rod was from the USA or elsewhere that has “utility” electricity providers … he’s not … he’s in QLD but even the daylight saving joke of being an hour and 10 years behind does get him out of trouble (the NEM is over 2 decades old)! We do NOT have utilities … the sad thing is we do still have a lot of vertical integrated thinking by politicians and our regulatory triumvirate AEMC, AER, and AEMO … and of course by the incumbent gentailers trying to preserve their “utility” glory days! The extraordinary thing is that with our structurally separated deregulated NEM we have the best opportunity for the CONSUMER GRID … an optimisation of the Distribution Networks as a platform to deliver the lowest community cost energy system!! However we are our own worst enemy … the gentailers resist any/all network tariff reform, and facilitate pitting some consumers versus others! We need low cost storage deep in distribution with a focus saving consumers on their energy rather than retailers (read gentailers) making profits via arbitrage! That’s what Community Batteries with ESaaS (Energy Storage as a Service) deliver … in spades! A DNSP/DSO partnership with Consumers to deliver the Consumer Grid would dramatically reduce the community cost of energy. However an essential part of that is a understanding that the distribution network is a community commons for energy *flow* not (just) delivery. We need to think of distribution as subscription platform that provides us the capacity to BOTH import and export … it’s the dynamic nature of the flows that is important. Then we can use the network free of “tolls” to export excess RTS to a Community Battery, and get it back, and/or store cheap (even free or be paid to take) grid VRE to use later (if we don’t have RTS)! We would just have to a path a “round trip” ESaaS fee though that buffer. That ESaaS fee would always be less than trying to do it with our own BTM battery and that’s before all the risks, dramas, and would be pickpockets trying to elk an earning out of your battery! A Community Battery’s much more easily managed value stack revenues would simply be used to lower the ESaaS (as it’s using the consumers’ energy for FFR, FCAS, network support etc.). We (consumers and our regulators) really have to look at DNSPs differently, focus on them being DSO’s with the Consumer being THE “stakeholder” and “client” with the regulatory focus being, as it is now, the lowest community cost of energy (ie the NEO)! Are we undervaluing the contribution that household rooftop solar can contribute as a distributed energy resource? What proportion of transmission upgrade costs could be avoided by generating a higher proportion of energy needs at source? Our main utility companies are still proceeding on the basis that THEY are the energy suppliers and the centralised grid the the mainstay of the system just like the 'old' days. Energy independent consumers with local network support may be the 'dark horse' in the race to net zero after all. #renewableenergy #householdsolar #ConsumerEnergyResources #leastcostenergyservices #energyeconomics
