As Qld mining professionals based on site know, there are buildings, shipping containers, and other assets that do not meet current tie-down requirements.   And these cannot be classed as Safe Havens.   If you are a Mining professional tasked with finding answers to this challenge, BEAR believe we have a proven, certified solution for you.   Untold numbers of accommodation buildings, etc. throughout Qld mines are installed Old School - just sitting on dry-stacked blocks – these assets are prime candidates for needing to be made safe.   Previously, many of these buildings were secured with ‘duck-bill’ ground anchors - no longer a preferred option for securing assets.   Over time, duck-bills can lose their effectiveness, at times to the point of failure.   These duck-bills can work loose.   Their conical shape means they are easy to install, but with any seasonal ground movement – dry seasons, wet seasons they can become loose in the ground..   This means they become easily moved or removed and then provide no tie-down strength, at all.   With black soil predominant in many of Qld’s coal fields, ground movement is common – so you need a solution that negates this surface ground movement.   BEAR’s screw piles are designed to be installed to any depth required.    If you had, say 1,200mm of black soil, over deeper subsoil of solid ground, screw piles are installed through the black soil and anchor firmly in the stronger ground below.   This system allows the surface level black soil to move, expand, contract while the screw piles are through the black soil and into firm holding below.   Testing shows this alternative ground anchor system can offer greater than 50 year expected life span.   For the mining professionals, a specific key advantage is the screw pile system is fully engineered and certified – allowing Safe Haven status to be achieved.   This system is utilized on existing assets and on newly installed assets.   Virtually no excavation required. Below is an excerpt from the article featuring our Mining & Construction Business Development Manager - Troy Smith. "Two Ontario leaders in shaft sinking hoists To get some insight into one key hoists market – that is shaft sinking hoists, we spoke to two leading suppliers, who are both Canada-based -Timberland Equipment Ltd in Woodstock, Ontario and Mine Hoists International (MHI) in North Bay, Ontario which is a division of Mining Equipment Ltd. Beginning with Timberland Equipment, we caught up with Troy Smith, Business Development Manager. He says some of its largest projects in recent years have been in Australia. This includes four hoists for a single coal mining customer via the client, contractor RUC Mining. The winders were designed for a shaft sinking application. These winders control the lifting and lowering of the galloway during the shaft sinking process. Each of the galloways have two winders that are synchronised to lift and lower the galloway. The winders were designed with similar rope size, but did have variances due to project specific requirements. The hoists have 49,895 kg of line pull at 5.49 m/min in the first layer using 54 mm diameter wire rope. The drum is 90 in RD x 89 in between the flanges with each hoist having 1,550.82 m of rope on five layers. In addition to this project Timberland has also delivered shaft sinking winder solutions to a copper mine. This includes the supply of four shaft sinking winders for the Wira Shaft at the Prominent Hill copper mine which is part of BHP - these were supplied to the contractor Byrnecut. The Wira Shaft is designed to handle 6 Mt/y from 1,290 m below surface. Byrnecut has successfully introduced the Herrenknecht VSM shaft sinking system at the project - this mechanised, nonentry system excavated the shaft pre-sink to a depth of 93 m. Following the pre-sink, a pilot hole was constructed from surface to mid-shaft, then another from mid-shaft to shaft bottom. Komatsu reveals first underground BEV, the 4 t class WX04B LHD Komatsu is showcasing its latest underground #hardrock mining equipment at MINExpo INTERNATIONAL 2024 this week in Las Vegas. In particular, Komatsu is strengthening its underground hard rock mining equipment business through an enhanced lineup, the development of new mining methods, and strategic acquisitions, and will showcase its latest initiatives. First off, Komatsu says it is excited to introduce its first #batteryelectric powered LHD machine, the #WX04B, along with a 150 kW #batterycharger engineered specifically for underground hard rock mining. Designed for #narrowvein mines, this 4-t LHD features industry-leading battery technology with best-in-class energy density, offering up to four hours of run time on a single charge. And one of the standout features of the WX04B is its innovative #batteryswap system. Unlike many traditional systems that require extensive underground infrastructure, the WX04B’s battery swap can be performed at ground level without additional equipment or risks of rigging overhead loads. This streamlined process reduces costs and complexity, making it a more efficient and user-friendly option for underground mining operations. Additionally, key features of the 150 kW battery charger include power efficiency, broad compatibility with mining power sources (400 VAC to 1,000 VAC) and no need for an external transformer. This design minimises infrastructure requirements, offering mining operations greater flexibility without the need for a dedicated charging station. Komatsu will also showcase for the first time two machines from GHH Fahrzeuge GmbH, the German manufacturer of underground mining, tunnelling and civil engineering equipment acquired on July 1 of this year, under the Komatsu Mining brand. The WX15 is a 15 t class LHD with a maximum bucket capacity of 9 m³ and the HX45 is a #miningtruck with 45 t capacity—new additions to #Komatsu’s lineup with these specific vehicle sizes. Both machines are designed to work in tandem, offering productive three-pass loading cycles for maximum efficiency in mining operations. Komatsu is further excited to introduce its first medium-size class drill jumbo ZJ32 and bolter ZB31 to its lineup, further broadening Komatsu’s selection of offerings for the underground mining industry. MAJOR MINER👷♂🪨🇺🇸: In a quarry in Louisville, Nebraska, USA, a Wirtgen Surface Miner 280 SM(i) is used for the layer-by-layer and particularly environmentally friendly extraction of cement production-friendly limestone from previously undeveloped reserves. North American Mining (NAM) is the material extraction contractor drawing on limestone that remains far from exhausted, even though the quarry has operated since 1929. The geological situation, however, has made extraction a more difficult task, as the remaining limestone strata are interlayered with shale. Due to this, quarrying with conventional methods such as drilling and blasting would have led to material contamination. Therefore, the Ash Grove Cement Company decided to use a Wirtgen Surface Miner from NAM for the job. As the 280 SM(i) enables selective extraction of the primary resource, it can guarantee outstanding material purity and is the ideal choice for projects in areas with sensitive infrastructures. The 280 SM(i) cuts, crushes, and loads the extracted material in one pass. This means that pre-crushing or conventional extraction processes such as drilling and blasting are no longer necessary. In another life We approached the start of this years #rebuilds & #repairs article from a new angle - the market for end of life mining trucks. There are entrepreneurs now ensuring that value is realised from every part of the truck. HERCO EQUIPMENTS is a young Chilean company that is making a unique name for itself in the used mining equipment business. IM recently caught up in person with Managing Director Osvaldo Pastén: “When I founded this company with Ismael Galaz Perez in 2019, we set out to change the market in Chile. The used equipment and spare parts market is very specialised but it was very shadowy in terms of how equipment was sold and the deals being made. We wanted to bring transparency and structure and especially with regard to pricing. We set out to buy the whole used end of life mining truck asset...we then strip it down and sell all the usable components around the world - contributing to a #circulareconomy and ensuring the components can have a second life." Then we move on to rebuilds and GHH Fahrzeuge GmbH which has seen success in Chile rebuilding a fleet of its MK-A20 underground trucks bought back from a tunnelling customer. Seven of the rebuilt units are now working at a gold mine in Venezuela. All reman processes for the MK-A20s were executed according to the manufacturing standards of GHH and along with the design philosophy of the original machine frames, in that they are designed for life and not for a specific number of hours. Still on rebuilds and we talked in-depth to Quarry & Mining Equipment Ltd Mining & Tunneling Equipment Manager John Rooney. On standout points for QME versus other rebuilders in the mining market, Rooney states: “The distinctive thing about us is that as mining contractors we are also end users...operating this equipment day in day out we understand what the challenges and pain points are and the right way to troubleshoot and therefore we know what needs to be done in the rebuild business. Added to that is our almost 40 years of experience since 1985." We also review a recent Sandvik LH617 project QME carried out. And we talked to ARAMINE as for more than 25 years, it has been offering reconditioning of used equipment, entirely rebuilt according to strict quality criteria. The machines are collected from closed mines or from its customers, with whom it trades their old equipment for new units. For example, Aramine collected a drill rig in South America last year. It was shipped to its facilities in France for a full reman while the sales teams found it a new home in western Asia. Hexagon rolls out CAS at Oyu Tolgoi open pit Hexagon Mining has announced a partnership with Rio Tinto to deploy over 200 Hexagon AB #CollisionAvoidance Systems (#CAS) at the Oyu Tolgoi LLC / Оюу толгой ХХК #copper-#gold open pit mine in #Mongolia, including on the 30-strong 290 t class Komatsu Mining 930E-4SE haul trucks fleet as well as the loading tools which include two Caterpillar Inc. 7495HR rope shovels as well as Cat 6060 and Liebherr Mining R 9400 hydraulic shovels, plus a range of smaller class Komatsu and Caterpillar haul trucks, and in addition a wide range of ancillary machines. It is the first major CAS deployment in Mongolia, and Hexagon says its technology is now transforming safety and productivity at one of the largest known copper and gold deposits in the world. “The integrity of Hexagon’s product development is why we chose to build a partnership,” said Khorolsuren Ganzorig, Superintendent, Mine Support, #OyuTolgoi mine. “Since deploying CAS in our operation, I have noticed a drastic change in our operators’ driving behaviour. This will help to fulfil Rio Tinto’s and Oyu Tolgoi’s strong ambition to keep people safe in our mining operations.” Hexagon says it is dedicated to supporting the future of mining in Mongolia and is establishing a permanent presence there, adding: “This will allow us to fulfil a commitment to providing localised support for a growing partnership with Oyu Tolgoi and the broader mining industry in Mongolia.” Simon Stone, Hexagon’s Mining division VP APAC: “Any industrial operation faces challenges. Safety and productivity need to come together and be effectively managed. I’m sure that you can appreciate that in a world where’s 10,000 people working in the one facility, in the open pit and in the underground, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – that is a challenge – the management and the leadership of the Oyu Tolgoi mine are very diligent in identifying risks and mitigating them. Hexagon is proud to be a partner.” He also referenced the fact that this is just the latest development in an already long term partnership between Hexagon and OT: “We have had our mine planning technology here for a long time; we have our particle size distribution cameras; we have our survey equipment [IDS GeoRadar] #GeoRadars – with the collision avoidance system rollout we are taking that safety proposition to a new level, making sure people go home safe at night to their families.” Munkhsukh Bayar, Project Manager, Oyu Tolgoi Mine gave some more details on the deployment: “Currently we have deployed the system at Level 7 and 8…we have installed the collision avoidance system on over 200 equipment units as well as training over 1,000 people since we started deployment. The global requirement for skilled and experienced engineers to carry out independent validation of mining companies' compliance with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings management (GISTM) and other equivalent standards such as MAC TSM is growing, and the skills gap will only worsen when the new Global Tailings Management Institute (GTMI) comes into operation later this year, placing greater pressure on all mining companies to comply with the standards. However, technology can help here.
