Two years ago, I met Ludia, who had been living in and out of shelters with her grandsons for months, unable to find an apartment where her housing voucher could be accepted. Recent research shows that nearly half of California’s homeless population is over 50 years old, and metro-specific homelessness rates are driven overwhelmingly by the scarcity of affordable housing supply. As I've urged in my online book, Congress must streamline tax credit financing of housing, and eliminate current statutory barriers to using federal vouchers in more innovative, less costly housing projects, such as the prefabricated, quick-build projects we see in Mountain View, Redwood City, and San Jose. Local communities need a more nimble federal partner to help older Americans, like Ludia, age in dignity. samliccardo.com/plan/
I applaud your focus on homelessness. By 2040, almost one in every four residents will be 65 or older - and right now, nearly half of California's homeless people are over the age of 50. We need not only housing, but also accessory services such as career counseling, health services and more to help people become and stay self-sustaining.
This is why we need you in congress Sam - you understand the problem, you have true empathy for it, and have concrete ideas to solve.... So grateful for your intellect and willingness to step up and help.
Sam, You’ve hit the hammer right on the nail. It’s interesting how homelessness is not a boiling pot election issue. People and families living in tents in the USA? On this issue alone, I’d vote for you if you were running for president.
Sam, I also applaud your efforts for homelessness population 50 and older. Congress in fact should streamline tax credit financing of housing. There are so many other elements as well that Congress should enforce with respect to oversight after the work is completed on said sites. Countless numbers of families are left homeless now as result of old rules permitting hundreds upon hundreds of families and individuals erroneously remain in the housing projects throughout Mountain View, Redwood City and San Jose jurisdictions. Changing these rules can only occur at the congressional level and this is the next challenge.
Sam Liccardo's Silicon Valley housing projects? Imagine what that will look like in 50 years.
Sam, I agree with your comment. We must do more for those less fortunate.
Yes!! Thank you for sharing.

4moI agree about the options you mention above. We also need a Universal Basic Income (UBI). Why? Most older workers are being laid off retired early, soon after age 45. The job seeker landscape has not been good for older persons. Not in meaningful ways. What do these older persons do "If" they are unable to find jobs and cannot gain retirement benefits until age 65 or older? That forces them onto public assistance, for twenty years they must wait for their retirement benefits. I hope you manage to get the help we need.
