We need to shift how employers hire for climate jobs Hiring managers are looking for what we've termed, the “Sustainability Unicorn” - someone with tenured sustainability industry experience and a sustainability academic background Why? New research from Given, part of Anthesis, the largest group of dedicated sustainability professionals globally, has found that nearly half (49.6%) of UK employees will leave their jobs if their current employer fails to meet its corporate purpose (https://lnkd.in/eU9Rjgp7). Given the current climate, the increased awareness of climate change, and the importance of sustainable, responsible business, this is all largely unsurprising. But how will employers keep up with the increased pressure and the need for specialists who will turn promises into reality? Our take on this? Corporations need people with a unique blend of skills. Looking at the data and setting net zero targets is not a strategy, and for the corporate world to push forward and thrive in a decarbonising world they need individuals who are a master of trades, with the confidence not to hold out for perfection, but to continually strive for workable long term solutions. They have a 'get stuck in' attitude and are 'comfortable with being uncomfortable', not just traditional influencers with strong stakeholder engagement. ➡️ Want to find out more? Here are the top responses: "I don't have the opportunity to develop my technical skills and make a bigger impact." 🛠 "My company doesn't give me the autonomy to manage my workload or location." 🏡 "I want to earn more money." 💸 After conducting a poll, I've discovered that the desire to make a bigger impact is over 15% more popular than the next reason. 🌱 Introducing Circular Talent ! 🚀 I’m happy to announce the launch of a new project Circular Talent, a 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 dedicated to connecting talent with opportunities in the circular economy! 💼 Reflecting on my own journey with a 🎓 bachelor in business focused on marketing and finance, I remember how challenging it was to find a role aligned with my values. The constant feedback of “no sufficient relevant sustainability experience” led me on a five-year journey of entrepreneurial “fake it till you make it” and self-teaching until I was finally able to land a marketing job in the circular economy field. As a single 20-year-old, I was able to focus entirely on building this path for myself. But I realize how difficult this journey would have been with greater financial or personal responsibilities. It didn’t make sense then to have to work so hard just to be allowed to 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐈 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝—and it still doesn’t now. ⏳ Fortunately, the landscape is shifting. Companies are realizing they need people with 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭 as much as people with 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐞 to drive meaningful change. Recruitment is crucial in achieving sustainability. Why? Because companies’ sustainability strategies are shaped by who? People. It’s obvious to me that people are at the heart of every positive change. Corporate sustainability is no exception. Creating sustainability initiatives for a company is a daunting task. It takes a lot of work and can have major repercussions if attempted by the wrong person. But in a global workforce, finding the right person is like finding a needle in a haystack. That’s where recruitment comes in. I’ve spent the last 10 years recruiting talent in the sustainability space. I know what a positive impact the right person can have on your sustainability initiative. Or visa versa.
