Hey everyone! 👋 I've got some fascinating insights to share today about our robot overlords voice assistants like Alexa and Siri. 🤖 These handy helpers have come a long way thanks to major AI advances, allowing them to understand us better than ever before. But with great power comes great responsibility concerns around privacy and security. So I wrote up a blog post answering the most common questions I get about voice assistants: - How do they work and why are they always listening? - What security features are in place to protect our data? - How can we use them to make our lives easier hands-free? - What's next for voice tech and should we be worried? 😱 I won't spoil all the details here but let's just say we should embrace voice assistants while also being smart about enabling security features. WE DID IT!!!🎉🎉🎉 It only launched in March this year, but the NCBI Labs YouTube Channel hit 100 subscribers this morning. The aim was simple. There’s tons of great tech media out there, but often times the perspectives of those with Sight Loss get forgotten. The NCBI Labs channel focuses on tech from a more accessible perspective, while having some fun along the way. We’ve had AI tell us how Blind people can disarm bombs, we’ve nerded out over the Apple Vision Pro, and explored the world of accessible air fryers. And that’s only scratching the surface. As we move into September with tons of exciting product announcements, we’ll have plenty more content on the way. When I was growing up one of the big things that made me fall in love with tech was the media where blind and visualy impaired people discussed tech honestly, impartially and in a way that was cool and fun. However, SeroTalk, Triple Click Home, and the Blind Bargains Qast (BBQ) are all gone now. It’s great that we can build a new tech brand that gives people with sight loss a chance to get excited and passionate about tech again. This demonstrates why building a special-purpose network is such a dumb boondoggle idea. We already have connected cards! Albeit via cell phones. Crowd-sourcing the info is a neat hack but the question is whether people will understand the larger lesson of using generic infrastructure and moving towards a public packet infrastructure rather than continuing with the idea of a separate network for each purpose. We see lessons unlearned in efforts to bring back AM radios just to get one message type brute force style by broadcasting to everyone. This limits which messages can be sent -- no targeting and annoys everyone. Imagine if we could assume IP connectivity in cars. We already see this in cars as a premium offering so you can stream while driving. Who needs even an FM radio, which is lucky if it picks up local signals as you drive. IP connectivity taps into a world (literally) of content? The idea of confining emergency works to a small band is another boondoggle that costs lives when we could get access to the entire capacity and assume video and resilience. So, back to calling the crowd-sourcing a hack. Yeah, but it's one that is implemented as software and can rapidly improve as we learn rather than waiting for a perfect solution, After all life is a beta test to the end. Getting amber alerts on all my devices is a good example of the problem of well-designed systems that can't evolve. Give me a working hack so we can learn by doing.
