Over the past three years, UPCEA partnered with the University of Wisconsin–Madison to sustain and enhance the Distance Teaching and Learning (DT&L) conference, aiming to make it more accessible and impactful for the distance learning community. However, we found that many instructional designers, academic technologists, and faculty face barriers to attending in-person events due to limited travel resources and time. After extensive discussions with stakeholders, including Chief Online Learning Officers (COLOs) and the University of Wisconsin–Madison team, we are excited to announce a new direction for the DT&L Conference. https://ow.ly/KnG650UkUoB

Love this research on metacognition and especially the reflection worksheet by Tessa Forshaw and her colleagues. 🧠 💡 Some of my favorite sections of this paper are that... Good metacognitive reflection questions tend to: ● encourage self-awareness and self-monitoring. ● evaluate strengths and weaknesses in thinking. ● promote transfer of learning to new contexts. ● be specific and actionable. And the research summary notes that... ● People are able to learn metacognition ● High-performing design students tend to spend more time engaged in metacognitive thought processes...than low-performing students ● Metacognition plays an essential role in the process of learning transfer 🕹️ Great work and very applicable to games and learning as well!
Just presented on the practical applications of metacognition in design and design education at #DRS2024 with Richard Cox Braden and Eileen McGivney, PhD on behalf of Next Level Lab at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. From theory to practice, we explored how metacognitive strategies are an essential element of good design work. Grateful for the opportunity to connect with the amazing Design Research Society (DRS) community and for the engaging discussions with fellow design educators and researchers! This is our fifth year out for the Computing Insight UK Student Cluster Challenge - and every year the students surprise and delight us in unexpected ways. We set out the online portion of the challenge to cover off power, time, and cost... three things that need to balance against each other in order to solve the immediate need (get results) and long-term aim (don't be wasteful!). Each team had three workloads to process (of varying complexity and requirement) and not only did they have to return what they thought of as the 'best result' for the three (in the three hours they had to work on them), but also needed to take time to explain what they learned in a video submission. In return, we give them proper feedback and produce a high quality, incredibly silly video of our own. I consider this challenge one of the most fun and most difficult because we have to not only balance giving them a solid challenge to learn from... but we also need to remind the students to have a good time doing it. We do have a responsibility to our community and to the environment for making HPC/AI a sustainable and welcoming space... but if we fall into the trap of becoming too serious then the pressure can become too much - especially for students balancing studies and their own needs against four online challenges and a big, in-person finale in December. Needless to say - everyone was brilliant. The teams all turned in results and videos which showed off their personalities. I look forward to meeting them all in Manchester in December - and best of luck as the teams progress! Props to Alces Flight Ltd... with talents of Stuart Franks, Dominik Wojtak, Joe Oldfield and Michael Rudgyard who slayed the house down. Special thanks to our scoring official, Wil Mayers, who calculated just how we would set about designing the challenge, and Damian Jones who allow us to be us when carrying the challenge out. Up next on the student docket is OCF Limited, Logicalis, and DDN with their takes on this event. We are grateful to our fellow vendors and the HPC/AI Community for being incredible in their support of the next gen or our leadership!
Did you participate in Computing Insight UK Student Cluster Challenge 2024? We're excited to present the results of the Alces Flight Challenge! And what better way to announce them than with a song? Did someone say espresso? Check out who claimed the top 3 spots and which team created the most engaging video! We can’t wait to meet all the teams at the in-person challenge. #CIUK #Students #Espresso #HPC #ClusterChallenge University of Warwick, Imperial College London, UCL, Rosalind Franklin Institute

Stepping Outside My Comfort Zone: A First-Time MUN Delegate! Who says you can't start something new in grad school? Yes, you read that right - I attended my very first MUN conference during my Master's program! While some might chuckle at a "mature" delegate like me (let's be honest, middle schoolers might be doing this!), it was a fantastic experience. Sure, students in bigger cities probably have a head start with MUN, but that shouldn't hold us back, right? In my school days, MUN was a distant concept. College offered glimpses, but I never participated. This time, the opportunity arose, and after a bit of deliberation, I decided to take the plunge. The conference itself? Well, it wasn't perfect, but that's not the point. The key takeaway? I ventured outside my comfort zone and tried something completely new. That's what life's about, isn't it? Embracing new experiences, even if they don't turn out exactly as planned. We can't judge something until we try it, after all! #MUN #NewExperiences #LifelongLearning #MastersDegree P.S.Any MUN veterans out there? Tips for a future delegate always welcome!

🌟 Reflecting on an engaging WTMC Workshop! 🌟 This week, I participated in the WTMC spring workshop, where we explored the thought-provoking theme of "Endangered Futures." 🔍 We examined this topic from an STS perspective, engaging in critical discussions and exercises aimed at understanding how STS scholarship on 'futures' can serve as a dynamic intermediary in a world fraught with tensions. One particularly engaging exercise involved me getting hands-on with Lego and exploring the concept of action research. 🧱 It was a creative and insightful way to delve into the complexities of our topic, sparking innovative ideas and discussions.
