Happy #PrideMonth! Join us throughout June as we celebrate the extraordinary contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community to art. This marble head belonged to an over-life-size statue of the emperor Hadrian’s companion Antinous. A favorite of the emperor, the two remained close companions until Antinous’ untimely death in 130 AD, when he tragically drowned in the Nile. While some ancient sources suggest his death was an accident, others speculate that Antinous either volunteered or was forced, to sacrifice himself on Hadrian’s behalf. Hadrian elevated the deceased youth to divine status and named a new city in Egypt “Antinoopolis” in his honor, and he commissioned many portrait statues of Antinous. The worship of the new god spread rapidly throughout the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. Festivals were held in Antinous’s honor, and his likeness appeared on the coins of more than thirty cities. The cult of Antinous continued into the fourth century AD, nearly two hundred years after his death. To the present day, Antinous has continued to inspire a diverse array of artists and writers, and he remains an evocative figure for the LGBTQIA+ community and even an object of worship for some. #SanAntonioMuseumofArt #History

The plaque is featuring Apollo and Artemis as children, each with a serpent, is a fascinating piece of ancient art that would indeed be significant. Apollo and Artemis are twin siblings in Greek mythology, and they are often depicted together in various forms of art. Apollo is the god of the sun, music, and prophecy, while Artemis is the goddess of the hunt, wilderness, and childbirth. Heraclea Lyncestis is an ancient Greek city located in what is now the Republic of North Macedonia. Founded by Philip II of Macedon in the middle of the 4th century BCE, it was an important strategic and economic center. The city is known for its well-preserved ruins, including a theater, thermal baths, and beautiful floor mosaics. Artifacts like the one you mentioned are valuable as they offer insights into the religious practices and artistic expressions of the time. Depictions of deities as children are less common than their adult representations, making such a find particularly interesting. The presence of serpents might relate to ancient Greek religious symbolism or myths surrounding the deities.

📜 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: 𝐊𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐈𝐈 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 - 𝐀 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐢 𝐝𝐢 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐨 (𝟏𝟒𝟏𝟎)🖼️ Nestled within the Church of St. Francis in Volterra, Italy, lies a remarkable fresco painted by Cenni di Francesco in 1410. This beautiful artwork depicts a pivotal moment in history involving Khosrow II, the last great king of the Sasanian Empire of Persia. Khosrow II (also known as Khosrow Parviz) reigned from 590 to 628 AD, and his rule was marked by ambitious military campaigns and significant cultural achievements. Among his most famous exploits was the capture of the True Cross, one of Christianity's most sacred relics, during the Byzantine-Sassanian War. The fresco illustrates Khosrow II triumphantly securing the True Cross after his forces captured Jerusalem in 614 AD. This event is a fascinating intersection of Persian and Christian histories, symbolizing Khosrow's temporary dominance over the Byzantine Empire. The fresco captures not only the historical significance but also the deep emotional and religious reverberations of this event. Cenni di Francesco's work is renowned for its vivid colors, detailed expressions, and narrative depth. It serves as a powerful reminder of the complex and intertwined histories of different civilizations and religions. For those interested in exploring the rich tapestry of Iranian history and its global impact, this fresco is a must-see. It encapsulates a moment where Persian history significantly intersected with Christian lore, leaving a lasting legacy depicted beautifully by the hand of Cenni di Francesco. #IranianHistory #KhosrowII #TrueCross #PersianEmpire #ByzantineEmpire #CenniDiFrancesco #MedievalArt #HistoricalArt #ChurchOfStFrancis #Volterra #SasanianEmpire

🔸One of 4 golden hats found throughout Germany (3) and France (1). Nearly 3500 years old. The hats are associated with the Bronze Age Tumulus culture and Urnfield culture. Their close similarities in symbolism and techniques of manufacture are testimony to a coherent Bronze Age culture over a wide-ranging territory in western and central Europe. A comparable golden pectoral was found at Mold, Flintshire, in northern Wales, which is of somewhat earlier date.' 'It is assumed that the golden hats served as religious insignia for the deities or priests of a sun cult then widespread in Central Europe. Their use as headgear is strongly supported by the fact that the three of four examples have a cap-like widening at the bottom of the cone, and that their openings are oval (not round), with diameters and shapes roughly equivalent to those of a human skull. The figural depiction of an object resembling a conical hat on a stone slab of the King's Grave at Kivik, Southern Sweden, strongly supports their association with religion and cult, as does the fact that the known examples appear to have been deposited (buried) carefully.'

The God Hermanubis Hermanubis is known from a handful of #epigraphic and literary sources, mostly of the #Roman period. Plutarch [ΠΛΟΥΤΑΡΧΟΣ] cites the name as a designation of Anubis in his underworldly aspect [De Is. et Os. 375e], while Porphyry [ΠΟΡΦΥΡΙΟΣ] refers to Hermanubis as composite, and half-Greek [De imaginibus fr. 8, p. 18.1–2 Bidez]. It is clear that the name is a result of the assimilation of the #Egyptian god #Anubis to the #Greek god #Hermes, which is well attested in a number of #literary, #epigraphic, and artistic sources. Although #Hermes was traditionally equated with the #Egyptian Thoth, his function as psychopompos encouraged his association with #Anubis given the latter's comparable funerary role in #Egyptian religion as embalmer and guardian of the dead and as leader of the deceased to the tribunal of #Osiris. This assimilation resulted in widespread Greco-Roman representations of the canine-headed #Anubis with attributes of the #Greek #Hermes, such as the distinctive staff known as the kerykeion or winged sandals. In #Roman #Alexandria there emerges a new iconographical type, well represented in coins and sculpture, in which a fully anthropomorphic young god is flanked by a dog and holds the same attributes as the said #Anubis, in addition to wearing the kalathos headdress. It is this type that art historians have traditionally labelled Hermanubis. https://lnkd.in/d97yFPVu
