Conversations about whether particular schools should close or be consolidated, if too many or too few schools are affected, and if the process involved the right people at the right time leave little room for what comes after any decision: how closures and consolidations are implemented and what happens to students and educators in the process. We must act on lessons we have learned.
With the announcement of more #schoolclosures this year, we must be thoughtful about the capacity for change at school and district levels to best serve and meet the needs of the affected students, families, and educators. Read President and CEO Marinell Rousmaniere's op-ed on considerations on how to go about school closures in Boston: https://lnkd.in/eqGjAKRJ

Appalachian State University recently joined NCInnovation's expanding network of regional hubs which serve as headquarter locations for NCI's applied research support. Regional directors at these hubs provide critical support for research that has commercial promise. By expanding these hubs, NCInnovation strengthens its ability to support more university researchers and improve collaboration with industry. We’re excited to support the groundbreaking research happening in #WNC and statewide.
I am so excited to celebrate one of the newest #NCInnovation hub institutions, Appalachian State Univeristy, with my first official day on the App State Hickory campus. We are looking forward to exciting projects in the works for #WNC anchored by our west-region UNC schools. #WNC #appstate #innovationstate

One of the first questions parents ask is “how is my student going to navigate campus independently?” 🤔 🧭 First, NO ONE navigates campus independently. We help each other. Especially on the first few days of class. Your student will join thousands of other students on the #FDOC wandering around, trying to hide the fact that they have no clue where to go. Spoiler alert: faculty and staff are well aware and ready to help. It’s not about navigating on their own, it’s about knowing when and how to ask for help. 🧭 Second, I would put money on the fact that their #IPSE program has this top of mind. And not just on the first day of their freshman year. They have a process for checking in; a system for confirming that for the first few days, staff members and peer supports are visible and accessible. I can’t tell you how many times I walked circles around the student center, ready and willing to jump in and help, only to be approached by twenty students who WEREN’T in my program 😂. 🧭 Last, the wonderful Mindy Lingo led this recent Insight Brief for Think College, summarizing campus navigating instruction and strategies that #IPSE programs have used to support students with intellectual disability in inclusive higher education. Read it! #ThinkHigher #ThinkCollege #IPSE #InclusiveHigherEd #CampusNavigation #IntellectualDisability
🚌 🚶 Training in campus navigation helps students, including those with intellectual disability, gain independence and engage more fully in campus and community life. Raising educational outcomes for students with SEN and disabilities (MetaSENse) project. This project funded by the Nuffield Foundation looks really promising. The project carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effectiveness of interventions aiming to improve educational abilities for different children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), to understand what works best for which children in which settings. https://lnkd.in/dnRtr7eh

One of the four components of NCFL's #FamilyLiteracy model, Children’s Education supports the academic growth, social-emotional learning, and physical development of young children. Often, family literacy programs are embedded into existing educational programming offered by early childhood centers, schools, libraries, and community-based organizations to connect the other three components to Children’s Education. Learn more about the four-component model in our recent brief: https://ow.ly/Uykp50S92Qr
