Summer work teaches you patience and endurance🌡️🎯

Update on my AWESOME Internship! Normally, 68-year-olds should be chilling in life, reaping the rewards of their years of hard work, but not Mama Tina. I had the opportunity to create a short documentary featuring one of our students, Mama Tina, a 68-year-old Filipino entrepreneur. Mama Tina has been selling "Puto Maya" (a traditional Filipino rice cake) for over 5 years. Her dilemma is living off her daily sales, much like living paycheck to paycheck. She has no savings or retirement plans; what she earns in a day only covers that day's expenses. Through this short film, you can step into Mama Tina's world and witness her grit, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit. Her story is not just inspiring but a true celebration of the Filipino entrepreneurial spirit. I've been here for 2 months now, teaching business startup skills to 20+ students with my team and consulting with 10+ small business owners. As SEED interns, our mission is to foster self-reliance, so we spent a day with Mama Tina to understand her business and help elevate it to the next level. This internship has been awesome in so many ways. It’s a door for me to add value to others’ lives while also creating value in my own as it builds my character. The photo was taken 17 years ago when I conquered Mount Kinabalu with a group of my high school friends. Just six months earlier, I had completed my National Service. Surprisingly, I thought I was fit enough and skipped any training. Our trek started at 7 am, and by the time we reached the station, it was nearly 6 pm. The worst part was that I had injured one of my knees. The next day, hoping for improvement, I found that both knees were extremely painful and barely functional. Should I give up? As we faced the final 3.8 km to conquer Southeast Asia's highest mountain, I hesitated, unsure if I would return. Ultimately, I decided to push on. From 2 am until I reached the peak after 6 am, I literally crawled, my gloves torn and ruined. But when I glimpsed the breathtaking scenery from the summit, I felt every ounce of pain was worth it. The lessons I learned: 1. Be prepared for your journey to avoid unnecessary pain. 2. Setting clear goals and understanding your "why" is crucial; it keeps you going when quitting feels easy. 3. Don’t walk alone; seek support along the way. 4. Embrace your unique pace and strengths; the race is personal. Whenever I encounter challenges now, I recall these lessons. I remind myself that things will be okay; we just need to push through.
