Researchers from the University of Cape Town have developed a new set of tools to support mine closure planning. In South Africa, where unemployment is high – and many people rely on the fossil fuel industry for their livelihood – rapid mining divestment would impact millions. These new tools from UCT enable the ethical closure of mines, limiting social impact and adding to a growing body of global research with a uniquely South African perspective. Balancing the green energy transition with socially sustainable business practices is an important ESG principle. Learn more about the importance of sustainable investment: https://lnkd.in/dRhqg9zq

🔎 Navigating the Future of Sustainable Investment 🌱 Excited to share that my latest research has been featured in the Nordic ESG Lab Journal! I explored how financial portfolios are increasingly exposed to critical minerals—key components driving the global transition to clean energy—and developed a methodology that helps asset managers mitigate these emerging risks. As demand for critical minerals grows (driven by #cleanenergy and #AI), understanding their impact on financial portfolios is crucial for building effective sustainability strategies. Why does this matter? These minerals are mostly mined in developing countries ⛏ , often in conflict zones and with environmentally harmful practices ⚡ . By proactively managing these risks, companies can not only contribute to a more sustainable future but also reduce their risk exposure, ensuring resilience in their investment strategies. 🍀 As sustainable investments grow, so does the complexity of managing their risks. My research provides actionable insights for financial leaders looking to navigate this evolving landscape with confidence. this amazing exeperience and research was made possible by Kristjan Jespersen amazing guidance and supervision, as well Michele Sacchi great work in collaborating for the research Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eDFDtCAQ Let’s build a future where investments fuel sustainable progress while managing risks effectively. 💼🌍 #ESG #impact #impactinvesting #SustainableInvestment #CriticalMinerals #RiskManagement #PortfolioManagement

It's kind of obvious, isn't it. We can't solve the big hairy issues if we don't get better at working together. But how do you really do that? What does it look like to cooperate well? Is there a process? I had this brainwave that there may be a 'cooperation pathway' that takes individuals and organisations from championing action to delivering results. I've called it "the Cooperation Pathway for Sustainable Minerals Supply Chains" and I'd love to know what you think of it. How could it be developed? (How) is it useful? For example: 👯 Can this help miners cooperate better with ASM? 👯 Can this help supply chain stakeholders jointly address root causes to salient human rights risks 👯 Can it help new initiatives chart a course to effectiveness and efficiency sooner? 👯 How could this pathway help you, whether as a conceptual framework for making sense of why your cooperation may not be working to as roadmap to chart what comes next. 👯 What have been your best and worst experiences of cooperations and does the tool reveal anything to you? I've worked in so many collaborative processes and they're never easy - besides the politics that comes with working together, there are issues of power differentials, knowledge gaps, varying levels of commitment, personality differences, language differences, misalignment of why people are even in a room together, etc. etc., all of which create barriers to building trust, finding common ground and common understanding. My hope is this tool just helps everyone get a bit better at this. We can't solve climate change alone. We can't protect human rights alone. We are all in this together. #Letsworktogether.
Global challenges can’t be addressed without effective cooperation. We’ve developed 🔵 The Cooperation Pathway for Sustainable Minerals Value Chains 🔵 to help our stakeholders consider where they are in their journey to solving those big problems that can’t be resolved alone. It helps you see what needs to be strengthened to cooperate better, or identify where there is or may be duplication of effort, resource wastage or competition that is getting in the way of addressing a shared goal. The Pathway is particularly applicable to multistakeholder processes seeking to align diverse stakeholders to take complementary or joint action to address a common issue or opportunity. For example, ➡️ How can downstream actors and their investors address the severe ecological impacts of critical minerals production in Indonesia, Brazil or Zambia? ➡️ How can the West African gold mining community address the cumulative impacts of their activities on the transboundary Faleme River? ➡️ What should national women’s collectives prioritise when pushing for changes to policy and culture? It can also be used as a tool within companies to build greater alignment and cooperation on contentious issues, like dealing with community conflict or artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). It was anticipated, and now it's here. This is very welcome step. This will enable Canadian companies to draw more private capital and ensure that Canadian businesses remain competitive as the world moves toward net zero. This announcement would require Canadian companies to prepare for sourcing “right investor-grade data” for sustainability reporting. Disclosing climate-related financial risks necessitates accurate data. Green taxonomy is right step. This would help categorize economic activities based on sustainability performance. With this there will be refocus on environmental objectives like climate change mitigation, climate change adaptation, and biodiversity preservation. At Deloitte we are very well poised to help organizations take this journey in holistic manner which breaks down disclosure requirements into People (change), Process (audit and controls), Data and Technology aspects to provide “sustainable” platform and futureproof. #Sustainability, #SustainableDevelopment, #ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), #SustainabilityReporting, #CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), #ClimateAction, #RenewableEnergy, #CircularEconomy, #GreenBusiness, #CorporateSustainability, #EnvironmentalImpact, #ClimateChange, #ResponsibleInvesting, #GreenTaxonomy
