Excited to share my recent publication on induced spinal/cranial motor neurons (iSpMNs/iCrMNs) differential response to neurotoxic stress. Trying to identify factors responsible for these differences, we showed that stress-resistant iCrMNs show enrichment in proteostasis and neuronal function proteins. Notably, higher 26S proteasome activity and Ublcp1 levels contribute to stress resistance in iCrMNs. New research showing that α-synuclein protein, a hallmark of Parkinson's disease, may be transferred from gut mucosal cells to the vagus nerve and dorsal motor nucleus. The study used newly engineered transgenic mice with restricted and inducible pathological human α-synuclein expression in intestinal epithelial cells, providing evidence for gut mucosal cells as a potential non-neuronal source of fibrillar α-synuclein protein. New study introduces a screening method for identifying drugs that modulate the reactivity of astrocytes, cells implicated in neurodegeneration due to disease, injury, and aging. Histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) inhibitors were found to effectively reduce harmful astrocyte responses.
