Event #1 of a week of events for me ✔️ It was a pleasure to moderate a panel of great retailers - Francesca Mangano of TFG Brands London, Rachel Franklin of River Island, and Sara Brennan of Pentland Brands - at today’s Segura Retail Supply Chain Sustainability Conference. The event really allowed us all to get under the bonnet of what is required from fashion retailers to meet growing sustainability legislation and make progress with the ESG agenda. Key initial takeaways from the full day, which included sessions from Sophie Oldridge, Tony Mannix, Laura Houghton, Clara Eisenberg, and Kate Goldsworthy, are: 👩⚖️ Although vital to stay on top of it, especially as the ESG/sustainability regulatory environment continues to evolve and therefore demand new things of businesses, fashion retailers should caution against getting bogged down in the legislation. “Leave that to the lawyers.” ⛓️ All roads lead to the supply chain when it comes to getting on top of the ESG agenda. Retailers’ sustainability/ESG teams’ time is best spent where they know the biggest problems are and where they can have most impact. And it all starts with getting to grips with data across the value chain. 👥 It’s becoming a bit of a cliche in this space, but it is worth underlining - collaboration is key when it comes to ESG progress. Be it internally (cross-departmental approach), with industry peers (through events like today’s), or working more closely with suppliers. Legislation is coming and it’s going to require changes to how retailers operate - there’s no getting away from it. Not adhering to certain legislation will mean not actually being able to trade in certain territories. If that’s not enough of a business case for retailers to get their houses in order, I’m not sure what is. Loads more discussion points that I’m sure we’ll convey on Green Retail World in due course. Mars Wrigley trials new sustainable display unit in Tesco stores. Annelise Turner from GIG says, 'This is such a great initiative from Mars Wrigley showcasing their new cocoa bean waste shipper display units in Tesco. They cleverly combine sustainability with marketing, it’s a great step change for the instore retail media environment where printed POS is still highly prevalent. It’s a smart way to engage customers and promote eco-friendly values in the retail space. This move not only boosts their green credentials but also sets a solid example for other brands (and retailers) to follow, which I’m sure they will! Eco friendly marketing is exactly what the industry needs to move forward sustainably.' Should businesses be doing more to influence consumer behaviour on sustainability? 💭 ♻️ Yes, according to former Tesco group head of sustainability, Giles Bolton. Speaking at Anthropy, a leadership conference aimed at inspiring UK businesses to build a better Britain, he said: “There’s a contradiction in terms of how much consumers care and how much you can expect them to take action. A ‘spring clean’ of greenwashing has officially started, and the European Union is holding the bleach. Even the word ‘sustainability’ itself is getting a good scrub. 🇪🇺 Last month, we saw the European Parliament’s enthusiastic approval of the Green Claims Directive. 🧼 Now, Europe’s third largest e-commerce platform, Zalando, has reached agreement with the EU to clean up its act when it comes to green claims. 🇩🇪 The German e-tailer of shoes, clothing and beauty products had attempted to classify the sustainability credentials of the 7,000+ brands it stocks on its online department store through various labels, flags and filters. 👕 Zalando has committed to revising this approach to avoid misleading consumers, while still connecting them with products that align with both their style and values. #Sustainability tends to move up and down most consumers’ priorities depending on economics or their awareness of specific categories and situations. Brand strategy must work above this ever-changing landscape, and it requires clear long-term business choices and consistent execution. The result is that it is brands who are driving most of the positive change in environmental areas like packaging. Brands are doing this for several reasons – most are genuinely engaged with environmental issues, but it is also because it makes good business sense. Change is inevitable and they need to be prepared – not reactive. They also know that long-term consumer sentiment will require it of them. Preparedness is about economic efficiency and long-term protection. A core skill of great brands is to take the long view to ensure the brand remains relevant in the future. These two initiatives are part of this journey and show Diageo  and Baileys leading the agenda. We love the comment ‘progress over perfection’. It marks this as breakthrough innovation. Act fast, do it and then improve it. Make the change and then bring the consumer with you. This will have required significant investment – and risk – in changing an efficient, proven, existing supply chain. This is what brands do… they lead, yes always listening to consumers, but when a crossroads is reached, they act. Glass will be at the forefront of packaging change in the next decade. At the British Brands Group’s recent launch of their White Paper/research into Innovation in UK Grocery, one of the panellists @Tanguy Pellen of Skarbek, a leading innovation consultancy said the following: “… you ship 1 litre [of liquid] while you ship 1kg of glass. At the same time glass [uses] a precious material, sand, that’s burnt at 1600 degrees in a very high energy consuming oven… …anyone who thinks that will be the case in a couple of decades, well, it won’t be. From the mum and dad corner store, to your local pharmacy… all the way through to the grocery giants. What all do all retailers have in common?   >>>THE BAG>>>>   The instrumental shopping tool, that comes with you or is a part of every shopping experience.   I just read Closed Loop Partners Beyond the bag initiative impact report.   The average use time for a single use plastic bag is ~12 minutes.   The lifespan of a single used plastic bag is ~1000 years.   That’s insane….   The consortium to reinvent the retail bag which is made up of partners like Walmart , CVS Health Target Dollar General Kroger The TJX Companies, Inc. Ulta Beauty Walgreens and others are trying to reimagine, test and implement different initiatives to tackle this problem.   100 BILLION plastic bags are used in the US every year.   To my retail network here is Australia, I recommend reading this report. Its highlights some of the initiatives and potentially what could be adopted here.   I know there is a massive focus on ESG reporting, however, focus on sustainability will not slow and businesses will continued to be measured on the triple bottom line (profit, people, planet).   A lot of initiatives are deep within the supply chain. From reporting to meet mandatory requirements, to moving the needle on programs that reduce impact on the planet and people. If you’re looking at ESG reporting or ESG initiatives reach out as firms are now under the microscope to ensure we meeting the objectives.
