Interested in uncovering how specific battery and cell design choices influence CO2e emissions? 🔋 Lowering HV Battery Carbon Footprints by Manufacturing in Europe 🌍 As the world strides towards a greener tomorrow, electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with high voltage (HV) batteries stand out as pivotal tools in combating climate change. However, a crucial aspect often overlooked is the geographical location of battery production and its impact on CO2e emissions. With the world's most extensive automotive database at its core, we have meticulously calculated the cradle-to-gate carbon footprints of three different battery models: #Tesla Model Y 2022 (USA), #Volkswagen ID 4 2021 (Germany), and #BYD Seal 2022 (China). Our analysis demonstrates an average carbon footprint reduction of 14% and 25% when the HV battery is manufactured in Europe compared to the Americas or Asia respectively. This is driven by differences in the average electricity grid and so could be mitigated by using onsite renewable energy sources, or concentrating manufacturing in regions with the greenest energy grids (e.g. California or Yunnan).
