Transforming urban mobility on mission mode

An intriguing question on #india's #openmobility has been on my mind for the past few days: Is Namma Yatri Government backed? Why do I have this question ? Consider these facts: * Beckn Protocol powers Open Network For Digital Commerce (ONDC) * Beckn Protocol was piloted in #Kochi through #yatri * #yatri is #ONDC backed, JUSPAY owned * Namma Yatri is #ONDC backed, JUSPAY owned * Yatri Sathi is #ONDC / #NammaYatri backed, #westbengal Govt. owned So, essentially JUSPAY is the common element in the above and Beckn Protocol was initially specified for #urbanmobility How did we get to this situation? * FIDE (previously Beckn Foundation) was created * FIDE (previously Beckn Foundation) initiated a pilot with support from JUSPAY and #KMTA in #Kochi (this led to #yatri App) * Beckn Protocol was created with a mix of corporate (JUSPAY and others?) and philanthropic funding via #becknopencollective, a volunteer network * Central Government adopts Beckn Protocol and creates Open Network For Digital Commerce (ONDC) * Open Network For Digital Commerce (ONDC) backs #yatri (#Kochi) Namma Yatri (#Bengaluru) and Yatri Sathi (#Kolkata) * Success of Namma Yatri turbo charges Open Network For Digital Commerce (ONDC) transactions to record levels So, the answer to my own intriguing question is both yes and no: Yes, Namma Yatri is government (#ONDC) backed and No, because it is just a corporate led commercial venture. Teasing ambiguity!! No wonder that a large number of Bengaluru drivers think it is a Govt app, while customers think that it is driver union led app - a convenient perception that clearly fuelled the phenomenal growth and aligned with corporate goals. Very neat, Isn't it? Who said #philanthropy cannot be leveraged to direct the #community efforts for #corporate success? So, what's still missing in #openmobility? * #apps by different companies and modes to experience the magic of #interoperability; * participation and consultation with diverse #stakeholders (#drivers, #urbanplanners, #transportplanners); and * #open governance on #digitalcooperative principles Interesting year ahead for #openmobility and digital #ridehailing in #india !! Join the conversation so that collectively we can ensure #society gets it right and removes the inherent inequities in the current ridehailing business models.

ONDC is a Private Limited company. It is governed by bureaucrats and technocrats and managed by a cohort of Ernst and Young alumni. This group of mostly well meaning individuals are operating the mission "Democratizing Digital Commerce" on the assumption that the sellers of India need digitalization as a matter of survival. What they do not see is that their efforts are only paving the way for handing over India's small and medium scale industry to a handful of technology companies. They do not understand that "Democratizing Digital Commerce" is a cultural mission and not a technological mission. When Pattabhi Ram and Rudra Murthy have the same seat at the ONDC table as Vijay Shekhar Sharma, "Democratization of Digital Commerce" would have actually happened. And I know for a fact that Pattabhi and Rudra Murthy have done more for ONDC Orders Per day (OPD) numbers than Vijay Shekhar Sharma has.

The additional link that completes the loop: Governments are run by political parties and political parties are funded by for-profit commercial entities.

Food for thought indeed, but definitely Namma Yatri Auto is a good alternative against Ola Uber autos. Convenient and quick.
