The Africa CDC previously said mpox, also known as monkeypox, has been detected in 13 countries this year, and more than 96% of all cases and deaths are in Congo. Cases are up 160% and deaths are up 19% compared with the same period last year. So far, there have been more than 14,000 cases and 524 people have died. The African CDC has declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency in the African Region following the outbreak of Mpox in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other countries in Africa. The FMoH through Port Health Services, in collaboration with NCDC, has scaled up surveillance and other preventive protocols at all the international borders. Few tips 1. Maintain good hygiene and sanitation practices as always 2. Those with weakened immunity should avoid crowded places if possible 3. If you are a health worker practice infection prevention and hand washing frequently 4. Avoid risky sexual behaviours 5. If you feel sick, visit the nearest hospital 6. This new variant, clade Ib, spreads more easily through close contact, including sexual contact, raising concerns about further spread across Africa and beyond. As a dedicated public health professional, I have taken proactive steps to combat the complications and threats posed by cholera in our community. Recognizing the critical need for expertise in this area, I enrolled in a comprehensive course focusing on cholera, including surveillance identification, rapid response, and other essential aspects of cholera management. I was honored to be awarded a Certificate of Participation in the journey of gaining new knowledge about cholera. This course provided me with in-depth knowledge on identifying cholera outbreaks, implementing effective surveillance systems, and deploying rapid response teams to contain and manage the disease. Through this educational pursuit, I have gained a robust understanding of the best practices for preventing cholera and mitigating its impact on public health. I would like to express my gratitude to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) for initiating this vital training program. Their commitment to enhancing the capabilities of public health professionals through this course is commendable and has significantly contributed to our preparedness in addressing cholera outbreaks.
