As South Africa celebrates #30YearsOfFreedom ✊ this week and prepares to host its seventh national general elections, UNICEF has released its #Manifesto4EveryChild, with a clarion call to #ProtectAndPrioritize 💙 . We're calling on everyone - the government, private sector, academia, civil society, parents, children and young people themselves - to put our children front and centre in the country’s development. “Children are rights holders with specific needs and vulnerabilities. That’s why we need to protect and prioritize them, only then can we help to build a safer, fairer, and better South Africa #ForEveryChild – for everyone,” says UNICEF South Africa Representative, Christine Muhigana. Imagine living in a state of perpetual fear and uncertainty? For so many in the world right now this isn't just a distant image or headline in the news, it's their daily reality. There is no one more vulnerable in the face of genocide, war and conflicts around the globe than children. From Ukraine to Palestine to Yemen to South Sudan, the list of war zones is long, and the pain children and families endure is unimaginable. Think about a child you know, full of curiosity and a thirst for life. A love of their family, their place, their belonging. Now consider that UNICEF estimates that over 43.3 million children globally have been displaced because of violence and conflict. Every child has the right to feel safe. Under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, every child has the right to: 👉Live and grow up healthy. 👉Safety, no matter where they are. 👉Care, protection, and a home. 👉Education, play, and participation in cultural activities. 👉Receive help and protection when needed. 👉Despite near-universal ratification of this international treaty, countless children are denied these rights. And this isn't just a problem in "other countries." Here in Australia, children struggle with homelessness, domestic violence, poverty, hunger, incarceration, trauma, neglect and worse. The rights of every child matters. In different ways, in different parts of the world the rights of too many children are being denied. Sometimes systematically, in the most inhumane ways imaginable. The plight of children is a global issue demanding our immediate attention and compassion. As a community, a nation, we have a responsibility to make these rights a reality for every child, not just a promise on paper. Addressing the needs of children in conflict zones and those facing challenges in Australia reflects our commitment to human dignity and the well-being of future generations. 👉As adults, we have the duty to ensure every child has the chance to thrive in a safe and supportive environment.

👉 UNICEF will support the government to intensify reforms in key sectors to reduce #childpoverty, eradicate #violenceagainstchildren and improve the inclusiveness and quality of #education, enhance health care, social and #childprotection for all children and families. „Reforms focused on children will undoubtedly accelerate Montenegro’s progress towards the EU membership and reaching the Agenda 2030. In addition to public funds, the Government can leverage the Growth Plan and the Youth Guarantee to accelerate the reforms and become the first EU candidate country which supported inclusion of the most vulnerable children and families in this way. And UNICEF is ready to be your key ally on that”, said UNICEF Montenegro Representative Michele Servadei during his first meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister Filip Ivanovic. Servadei also highlighted that it is essential how the government decides to prioritise children and invest public funds towards quality services for them and their families. #UNICEF is ready to provide technical expertise on public finances for children so that the next year budget takes into account the needs of the most vulnerable children, youth and families of Montenegro.

The election results are becoming clearer, but the potential place of children and young people's issues in future coalition agreements still lacks clarity. Recently, UNICEF Belgium, Kinderrechtencoalitie Vlaanderen Vlaanderen (KIRECO), and La CODE (Coordination des ONG pour les droits de l’enfant), along with over 50 child rights organizations, created the #Memorandum: https://brnw.ch/21wKALo It covers important topics like poverty, mental health, education, participation, and many more. Children's rights should guide future governments. UNICEF Belgium urges political leaders to prioritize and protect children's rights, locally and globally. Let's ensure a dignified present and future for every child! 🌱 Support children by voting for parties committed to their well-being. 💙

From 29 May to 5 June, United Way South Africa reaffirms its commitment to protecting and promoting the rights of children across our nation. This week reminds us of our collective responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of our children, the future of our country. In alignment with UNICEF South Africa’s ‘Manifesto for Every Child in South Africa 2024: Time to PROTECT and PRIORITISE children,’ we echo the call to prioritise children in the country's development. As Christine Muhigana of UNICEF South Africa stated, “The holistic progress of a nation relies on a commitment to ensure its children not only survive but thrive.” United Way South Africa provides safe spaces for children to learn, grow, and reach their full potential. We work closely with parents, caregivers, schools, and communities to create a protective environment for all children. During this National Child Protection Week, let us join hands to protect our children. Together, we can make a difference and build a safer, brighter future for all. #ChildProtectionWeek #ProtectOurChildren #UnitedWaySouthAfrica #SafeSpacesForChildren

Every child’s voice is a seed of potential. When we fail to safeguard their rights, we don’t just silence that voice—we rob the future of its brightest possibilities. What kind of world do we create if we allow our most vulnerable to fall through the cracks? It's time to act, protect, and stand up for every child, because their rights today shape our society tomorrow. So, what role is each of us—governments, communities, organizations, and individuals—playing in ensuring no child is left behind? Until key stakeholders step up to answer this crucial question, the future of Uganda's children remains uncertain. We must unite and advocate for the rights of these children, often unheard due to their vulnerability and inability to defend themselves. Children, by their very nature, depend on us to stand up for them. It is our responsibility to rise, not against them, but for them—ensuring they are protected, valued, and given the chance to thrive. #togetherwecan #uniteacrossboardersforchildren UNICEF Uganda Defence for Children International - International Secretariat
