Honoring Courage and Sacrifice: The Celebration of Philippine National Heroes Day In the heart of the Philippines, a nation rich in history and valor, one day stands out as a time to remember and celebrate the individuals who have shaped the destiny of the archipelago. Philippine National Heroes Day, observed on the last Monday of August, is a poignant reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering love for the country that defines the character of its national heroes. Philippine National Heroes Day is not just a historical observance; it is a unifying force that brings together the diverse cultural and regional communities that make up the Philippines. It serves as a reminder that the struggles faced by the heroes were not confined to a specific area but affected the entire nation. The celebration transcends geographical boundaries, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared responsibility among Filipinos. In a world where historical narratives can sometimes be forgotten or overshadowed, the observance of Philippine National Heroes Day serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who paved the way for the nation's prosperity. It is a day to honor their legacy by fostering unity, encouraging civic participation, and inspiring the next generation to carry the torch of heroism forward.

For a lot of Australians, Australia Day is a day of celebration, a day off work, Triple J's hottest 100 or simply beach and BBQs, and many don't even realise that the day marks the arrival of the first fleet of colonial settlers to Sydney's shores - not Captain Cook's "discovery". Australia day has only been acknowledged nationally since 1995, and is becoming more and more controversial as it also brings into focus the impact of colonialisation on Australia's First Nations people. FISH acknowledges that for First Nations people, today may be known as Invasion Day, Day of Mourning, Survival Day, or Aboriginal Sovereignty Day. We stand together with you, recognising the continuing challenges and disadvantage faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in this country, the need for Australian's to listen, to seek to understand and to respect the different perspectives of First Nations people. Not only on this day but especially on Australia Day when the tragic and devastating aspects of Australia's history since the first settlers arrived is brought into focus. #alwayswasalwayswillbe #firstnations #aboriginalaustralia #truthtelling #australiaday #indigenousperspectives #firstnationsaustralia #togetherwecanmakeadifference #firstnationshistory

My thoughts are with the Pfitzner family in this difficult, heartbreaking time. All of us were in shock on hearing the sad news. I had the comfort of being sat with my immediate team in person when his passing was announced; we sat in silence, speechless, and left comprehending the loss of a gentleman whose leadership qualities were so profound. I met Kym in person just once and only briefly, but this experience left me with a lasting impression of a great presence; a man with a great intellect of course, yet his curiosity and empathy shone most brightly. It was a privilege to observe his transformational leadership of Australian Red Cross these past years, and his devotion to the service of others. Another leader I respect very much said how awfully unfair all of it is. And they’re absolutely right. It is unfair. Kym devoted himself to ‘doing good’, being the best version of himself, and yet was taken so suddenly and far too early before he could deliver all his ambitions and an even greater impact. In saying that, Kym has guaranteed Red Cross has the foundations to serve local Aussie communities for another hundred years with a clear focus and fresh resolve. To be there when individuals and their communities, for generations to come, are in their greatest times of need. One can’t help but reflect in these moments: to reevaluate who and what matters most to you, the kind of legacy you wish to leave, and the preciousness of time. It ‘puts life into context’. Sometimes, all too often for me, we can risk placing too much energy into the petty, small issues found abundantly in daily life that can feel all consuming at times when, in fact, they've been raised far above their true weighting. Life is precious.
It is with great sadness that Australian Red Cross has recognised the passing of CEO Mr Kym Pfitzner. Kym leaves behind a legacy that will live on at Australian Red Cross for many years to come. He will be remembered as a trusted confidant, inspiring mentor, and true friend. In Kym’s memory we will continue to deliver vital support to vulnerable communities right across Australia and internationally. Something we know Kym would be proud of. Vale Kym Pfitzner.

The history of St Helena is fascinating and touches many aspects of world history. Discovered by the Portuguese in 1502, it has since been in British possession, only being briefly taken over by the Dutch in 1633. The island became a port of strategic importance until the opening of the Suez Canal and the advent of steamships. The island’s remote location meant it was used as a place of exile for key prisoners, including some 6,000 Boers, Chief Dinnizulu, Bahraini princes, and Napoleon, who died on St Helena. The Island also played an important role during the abolition of slavery. This heritage provides a significant legacy of fortifications, remains, historic buildings, and what has been described as “the quintessential Atlantic port” - Jamestown. Situated in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean, this small British island territory is one of the remotest places on Earth. Until the airport opens in early 2016, the main way for tourists to get to St Helena is by ship, on the RMS St Helena. #AStoryOfBones #StHelena #SaintHelena #Documentary #reclaimingnarratives #historicalinjustice
