There is multi - trillion dollar gap in climate funding that requires innovative thinking and diverse solutions by capital providers globally. Emerging nations and the Global South are forefront in being able to lead the way to accelerate change by utilising carbon as a new asset class that will really drive impact for a broader stackable value. As I reflect on my decision to pursue graduate studies in environment and sustainability, it's clear that my motivation was deeply rooted in a desire to confront the urgent challenges posed by climate change and global warming. From the outset, I was drawn to the idea of translating academic knowledge into tangible action, particularly in the communities most vulnerable to environmental degradation. While textbooks provided a solid foundation, I yearned to witness firsthand the dynamic interplay between policy formulation and on-the-ground implementation. Fast forward to the present, and I find myself working in a sphere where I have the opportunity to be part of initiatives in which cities and states across the US are embracing transformative measures like building benchmarking performance standards. It's an exciting time to be working in the industry of decarbonization and building efficiency, with these standards gaining momentum nationwide. These standards aren't just bureaucratic checkboxes; they're pivotal in our collective journey towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. With buildings accounting for a significant portion of greenhouse gas emissions, our work in this sphere holds profound implications for our planet's future. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities, but I'm fueled by the knowledge that our efforts are making a tangible difference. By championing sustainability at the intersection of policy and practice, we're not only reducing carbon footprints but also fostering resilient communities that can thrive in the face of environmental adversity. Big changes can start with a small nudge! 💡🤏 In our journey towards a more sustainable and efficient building stock, it's easy to think that only massive investments and complex policies will get us there. While new energy performance standards, financial schemes, and comprehensive technical support will play a vital role, sometimes what really moves the needle is understanding what people want. 🤔 The #NUDGEproject shows us that subtle, tailored nudges and small behavioural prompts can significantly influence energy-saving habits. By analysing energy use in diverse settings across five EU countries, NUDGE designed interventions that resonate on a personal level. For instance, simply informing people about their neighbours’ energy-saving actions led to noticeable reductions in energy use, with some nudges achieving up to 16% energy savings. ⚡📉 Even small behavioral nudges can pave the way for significant energy savings. A Take Home Summary The Current global development trajectory is undeniably unsustainable. Three dominant paradigms anchor us to this perilous course, and to pivot towards sustainability, these three paradigms must shift, Firstly, we must shift from linear models of consumption production, where resources are used and then discarded to circular approaches that are designed for reuse, regeneration, and restoration, Secondly, we need to shift from Static and short-term mindsets to dynamic and forward-looking thinking, enabling us to anticipate and prepare for an uncertain and increasingly volatile climate and environment. Lastly, we must shift from a reductionist perspective, focusing on isolated components of a problem to embrace holistic systems thinking, recognizing and navigating the intricate web of global interconnections.
