This morning I was thinking about the FAFSA Fiasco and what I might offer to students and families to help them pay for college. Here's my thought: 💡 💡 Private Scholarships 💡 💡 What do you think? What else can families do? In addition to the $120 billion of aid (grants, work-study and loans) from Federal Student Aid an Office of the U.S. Department of Education, private scholarships are a great source of free money 💰 💰 . TY Melanie Hanson and the Education Data Initiative for this: There are $7.4 billion of private scholarships - more than double what was available 20 years ago 👏 How do you find private scholarships? - Use free search engines like the one at MyCollegeCorner.com - Ask high school counselors about local awards from community groups and businesses - Talk to friends - particularly those with recent HS graduates - Buy a book. 📖 I still like flipping pages!!! 👍 👍 Tips for success 👍 👍 : - Find a few and apply based on what fits the student's specialness - File a focused application, one generic essay for all won't do it - Meet the deadlines 👎 👎 Don't pay to have someone else to go looking. And be careful about giving your email address or other info in order to access a scholarship search site. You get enough unwanted email follow-ups! Unfortunately, the FAFSA delays, caused by the Department of Education, continue… While many 12th grade students have received their college acceptances, most have not received their financial aid packages. In a difficult year, such as this, here are our recommendations for right now: 1. Search online for your college's costs for tuition and room and board for 2023-2024. (Assume costs might increase a little bit for 2024-2025.) 2. Subtract the grants and the scholarships that the school has already offered the student in their acceptance letters. 3. Know that your Freshman is eligible for up to $5,500 in student loans if they submit FAFSA. Subtract this amount from above. 4. The total that you are left with is the cost to attend that college, assuming that you were not to receive any financial aid. 5. Can you afford the cost? Would you need to take out additional loans and how much when thinking about four years worth of college? 6. Do this exercise for all of the colleges that you are considering? Can you afford to commit to the college of your choice right now? 7. Continue to search online and through your High School Guidance Office for private scholarships. Oftentimes, not everyone has a simple situation. A common misconception is that scholarships are only available for those with exceptional grades or abilities. “There are lots of different scholarships out there and lots of different types of scholarships,” says Jefferson Pestronk, executive director of the Modern States Education Alliance, a philanthropy focused on college accessibility and affordability, and a former director of special initiatives in the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Innovation and Improvement. As a result, there are many opportunities for students to save on education, regardless of their grade point average or their standardized testing score. However, it’s a double-edged sword. “You’ve got to put in the legwork to find the ones that match who you are,” Pestronk says. CNBC Select has rounded up six scholarship search services that could help you save on school. "Under a rule that takes effect July 1, colleges that receive federal student aid will be required to provide all students who request an official transcript with one that covers the payment periods for which they’ve paid in full.
