Brisbane Broncos overtake the Melbourne Storm to be the most widely supported NRL club in 2024 with 1.3 million supporters The latest data from Roy Morgan shows the total #NRL supporter base has grown strongly from a year ago to over 7.4 million Australians (33.1%), up 2.4% from a year ago, who now support an NRL team. Looking over a longer time-period the increase is even more impressive, up by over 2.1 million (+39.7%) compared to four years ago in 2020. For the first time since 2020 it is the Brisbane Broncos who are now the most widely supported #NRL club in 2024 with 1,302,000 supporters, a stunning increase of 152,000 (+13.2%) on a year ago. This boost for the Broncos comes after the club played off in last year’s NRL Grand Final and had their most successful home and away season for over two decades – however, the club failed to repeat their success this year. https://lnkd.in/eFWMTHUu where are the PGA and LIV negotiations? Necessary analysis of sport-specific issues, but it takes too long to get to the heart of the matter, which is PIF wanted and has gotten access to the upper reaches of American finance with its incursion into pro golf. The goal has been obtained. The PGA would be wise to cede some control of its model so golf quits splintering.

Sir Clive Woodward claims that the RFU has "sold its soul". I disagree. This week, England Rugby announced the expansion of a pioneering partnership that sees Allianz take on Naming Rights for Twickenham Stadium. (this is the 'soul selling' part). What followed was predictable levels of uproar, shared amongst Rugby Union's commonly dubbed 'traditionalists' (I prefer to think of them as proud champions of the sport!). Sure, I can understand why - the home of England Rugby is steeped in heritage and for the most part, has remained untouched (ignoring British Airways spot on the roof). However, there's a bright side to this story... The harsh reality of the situation is that Rugby Union has been in dire need of a cash injection for some time - from the elite level of the Men's and Women's game, through to grassroots and communities, we've been on the decline. Enter Allianz; a brand with their own rich heritage in the sport, not to mention a network of world class stadia around the globe - put simply, they know what they're doing. This is a partnership, not a sponsorship. Allianz are making a long-term commitment to deliver positive impact beyond bricks and mortar, as indicated by their mission "to help more people watch, support and participate in the sport they love". Promises have been made for a transformative partnership - one that will provide crucial support to organisations at the heart of the sport. Already, Colm Holmes, CEO of Allianz Holdings plc, has announced investment into a programme that will "provide significant investment to grassroots Rugby and help secure the future of the community game". This is what we need! I, for one, feel more optimistic about the future of 'my sport' than I did this time last week. What I hope though, is that the RFU don't shy away from the criticism this partnership has been met with, but rather, openly communicate their plans for reinvestment and redevelopment. Not enough noise is being made about the opportunity that lies ahead. P.S. There's nothing stopping you from continuing to call the ground "Twickenham" or "HQ"... One of the world's leading insurers, Allianz, and the Rugby Football Union (RFU) announce the next step in their partnership, as Allianz extends its support for rugby by making a significant, long-term investment in the game. As part of this agreement, the home of England Rugby, Twickenham, will become 'Allianz Stadium' from September. Read more: bit.ly/3WR9scH

As I stated in a previous post where Greg Norman won £70,000 for his victory at Trump Turnberry in The Open 1986 - The winners checks should return to a normal level so the The R&A can spend more globally promoting the game as they are charged to do - same goes for the United States Golf Association (USGA) & PGAs. It is not any way in their remit to pay pros generational wealth in a single check. I keep hearing the from the pros themselves that they are playing for legacy and trophies not money - The for profits (PGA TOUR, DP World Tour, Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA)) & others that self-fund (LIV Golf, Masters) may increase the purses as much as they like and sponsors will support - but the organizations that grow the game from grass roots support so that the leaderboards are full of flags from around the world should have the support of the professionals to cap the purses - The prestige of the Major shouldn't be contingent of the amount of the winners check. As Martin Slumbers bravely brought attention to the fact the escalation of purses on Golf's most important organizations is unsustainable. In addition, a reduction in the overall men's purse would, like tennis, hopefully allow equal men's and women's payouts in the majors hosted by those organizations as they support both. The Open is the greatest legacy major and doesn't need the largest purse to prove it. #growthegame Augusta National Golf Club #TheMasters PGA of America The PGA The Golf Business
The winner of The 152nd Open at Royal Troon will receive USD 3.1 million in prize money. The Champion Golfer of the Year will receive the highest amount in The Open’s history as it returns to the renowned Ayrshire links for the tenth time. The R&A announced that the total prize fund for The Open, played from 14-21 July 2024, will be USD 17 million, a USD 500,000 increase on 2023. Martin Slumbers, CEO of The R&A, said, “The R&A has a responsibility to strike a balance between maintaining The Open’s position in the global game, providing the funds required for governance and developing amateur and recreational golf in 146 countries internationally. “We have to make choices if we want to continue to build on the significant growth in participation that is essential for golf’s future. “We remain concerned about the impact substantial increases in men’s professional prize money are having on the perception of the sport and its long-term financial sustainability. We are determined to act with the interests of the global game in mind as we pursue our goal of ensuring golf continues to thrive in 50 years’ time.”

Sir Dave Brailsford, long serving chief of the British Cycling Team and the person to whom the marginal gain doctrine is attributed to. Namely, upon becoming Chief of the BCT in 2003 he implemented the marginal gain doctrine which focuses on small, incremental steps (or up to 1% getting better) in different segments of that sport. As a result of that, in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics the BCT won 8 gold medals, something that was unthinkable in the 100 years long history of the sport. What's most important is that this concept is applicable and gives results in all other walks of life; business, relationship, personal development, education, science etc. #marginalgaindoctrine #incremental #gettingbetter #education ##personaldevelopment

Hear from Toby Freeman on why he chose to train as a financial adviser after a career in rugby with St. James's Place Financial Adviser Academy “To be a competent and effective financial adviser, you need to be good with people. You need to be asking the right questions, and you need to be interested in other people. You're not trying to be the most interesting person in the room; you are genuinely trying to get to know other people. It was the same in rugby, and it is the same in this new world as a financial adviser.” To read more, head to the LAPS Blog! #lifeaftersport #lifeafterprofessionalsport #financialadvice #retrain #careerchange #rugby Cornish Pirates Rugby Football Club Exeter Chiefs Harlequins
