What exactly is a standard? What does it mean for the SBTi to become a standard-setter? And why is it important for the future of corporate climate action? Since announcing plans to become an independent entity, the SBTi has been on a journey from a partnership initiative to a formal voluntary standard-setter. This enables the SBTi to play a more influential role in shaping corporate sustainability practices, driving innovation, and accelerating measurable progress towards a more sustainable future. In this blog, SBTi Chief Technical Officer Alberto Carrillo Pineda explains the concept of standard-setting and the pivotal role standard-setters can play in corporate climate action. High-integrity #VCMs hold the potential to deliver additional mitigation and sustainable development impacts at speed and scale. VCMs with integrity can help finance urgent climate action, such as the protection and restoration of forests and nature, as well as bring benefits to indigenous people, local communities, and national economies. Our flagship event, 'Mobilizing Corporate Climate Action through High-Integrity Voluntary Carbon Markets', took place during #cop28 where VCMI showcased climate leadership by the companies who are pioneering action in a new era of high-integrity voluntary carbon markets (VCMs) to help keep 1.5 alive. VCMI and The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) have created the framework for high-integrity carbon markets. We urge more companies to adopt our guidelines and demonstrate their commitment towards climate leadership. Its only through making bold steps towards climate action and setting an example for others to follow that we will make a real impact. The time to act is now! Check out our new blog on Science Based Targets initiatives new Beyond Value Chain Mitigation (BVCM). The TLDR; the time to act is now!
🌍 New SBTi guidelines on taking action outside your own value chain ⛓ The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) just released their new guidance on how companies can engage in Beyond Value Chain Mitigation (BVCM) for their sustainability strategies . Our team at Klimate has actively participated in the work behind this groundbreaking guidance, and Kathryn and I just wrote a blog summing up new guidance 🤓 ⭐ In short, the new SBTi guidance encourages companies to invest in climate mitigation alongside science-based targets. BVCM is a game-changer, fostering short-term, immediate mitigation and funneling investments to scale necessary solutions, including removals. Key Takeaways: ✅ Four defined principles for BVCM implementation ✅ Three specific steps to implement BVCM alongside your net zero strategy: Pledge, Act, Report ✅ Larger role for carbon removal projects within SBTi's framework Importantly, the new guidance is non-prescriptive, meaning sustainability leaders must to choose their own path for BVCM, depending on what is right for their company, and accomplish strategic goals rather than numeric targets. Our thoughts on BVCM align closely with SBTi's principles, emphasizing integrity, quality, and safeguarding against adverse effects. We believe this guidance will accelerate corporate adoption and implementation, pushing companies to go "above and beyond" in their climate investments. Kudos to SBTi for paving the way towards removals as a key part of sustainability commitments. The coming months and years will show whether the new guidance provide enough incentive to encourage this. Nonetheless, the new BVCM guidance is a huge step in the right direction, as it provides companies with tangible guidelines for how to invest in projects that remove carbon from the atmosphere 🌿💚 🌐 Check out the full blog post here: https://lnkd.in/dNr3nKAg. #ClimateAction #SBTi #BVCM #Sustainability #Klimate #NetZero #BeyondValueChainMitigation #CarbonRemoval

Building true, reliable and accessible voluntary carbon market | Director & Carbon Markets Service Lead in Anthesis NA
Why, from Anthesis Group, do we support the public consultation process of the Science Based Targets initiative #SBTi initiative to support the development of corporate guidance on mitigation beyond the value chain #BVCM? Anthesis supports all constructive input to increase the confidence, rigor, and usability of the voluntary carbon market #VCM as a key solution in climate action, as we recognize the dearth of investments critical to achieving the climate transition. For this reason, our participation in this process is based on promoting that THERE IS NOT TIME TO WAIT only for the reductions that many of the companies have planned and are achieving, but that companies must simultaneously decarbonise their value chains in alignment with their science-based targets (both near- and long- term) and invest in solutions beyond their value chains. Personally, I believe that this Guide, along with other market initiatives to increase market robustness and trust such as ICROA, The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) or VCMI, reinforces the message that Beyond Value Chain Mitigation is a critical element to corporate climate leadership, our hope is that SBTi’s BVCM guidance quickly closes the gap on needed investment and achieving the mitigation goals outlined by the Paris Agreement. #offsetting #carbonremovals #climatechange #mitigation #carbonmarkets #sustainability Climate Neutral Group

Thrilled to mark Earth Day and gear up for the WBCSD LD meeting by collaborating with Kathleen Abbott, Ian Minnes, Nathalie Waelbroeck, Roni Deitz, PE, Margarida Gonçalves, Jan Zandbergen and other Arcadians across the world to elevate lifecycle thinking in our efforts to transform the built environment. The rapid expansion of the built environment demands urgent action. Despite technological advancements, our reliance on carbon-intensive materials remains a major contributor to the climate challenge. However, by considering the entire lifespan of buildings and other infrastructure, there is no doubt that we can minimize carbon impact and drive the transition away from extractive, high-impact consumption patterns toward regenerative, circular alternatives, guiding us towards a more sustainable future. #DecarbonizeTogether #FutureImpact
