It was a joy to attend this webinar by Kerry Wixted last night! I learned so much about salamander biodiversity, amphibian diseases, and what members of Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) are doing to protect these wonderful creatures. As a graduate in #medicinalchemistry, I was especially excited to hear that the medicinal properties of amphibians' secretions are well-known in this field and that possible treatments are being developed for amphibian diseases. Perhaps my goal of doing some "frog chemistry" is not unrealistic after all! #amphibiandiseases #amphibianconservation

UOW Associate Professors Jennifer Atchison and Sonia Graham will be presenting at the International Association for Society and Natural Resources - IASNR conference next week on the ways people can help manage weeds for the sake of biodiversity. Weeds harm native plants and are often the common denominator of most biodiversity threats facing our immediate environment, but how do we address this? “We don't manage the environment without people. This conference is unique as we are focussing on the people, with the purpose of engaging people to manage the environment,” Associate Professor Atchison said. “To manage weeds and invasive plants better, we need to understand how their management is intertwined with social and cultural connections to place, the management and conservation of ecological communities, and societal responses to extreme events, such as hurricanes and bushfires. It is hoped these sessions at the conference will assist international collaboration where scientists and practitioners come together to form a social science agenda for weed management. #ThisIsUOW #UOWResearch

🌳🎤 This is one of the biggest challenge of our time: Restoring forests on a large scale while involving local communities. Today, there are 900 million hectares of land worldwide awaiting restoration, with 1/6 of them in Brazil. However, at the current pace, only 5% of the UN's restoration goal for 2030 will be achieved. THE QUESTION IS: "can we combine scale with co-benefits, benefiting both biodiversity and people?" I believe that high-quality restoration projects are the answer. These projects not only address the scale of the challenge but also bring benefits to both biodiversity and local communities. The fourth and final day of the Brazil Learning Journey focused on nature and biodiversity. Suzana and Claudio Padua hosted participants at the IPÊ - Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas (Institute for Ecological Research) in the Atlantic Forest, where we explored the local ecosystem and planted native trees. Indigenous leader Yakuy Tupinamá also joined the Learning Journey to share ancestral wisdom about the ecosystem, inspiring more questions about what we can learn about our relationship with nature from such a biodiverse country.
