Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s Post

We want to ensure the world knows that when it comes to science and technology, the UK is open for business. Sir Patrick Vallance has relayed this message to key allies at the G7 Science and Technology Ministerial in Bologna this week, to strengthen ties and build on our world-leading expertise.

The debacle with ☢️ Euratom ☢️ needs to be remedied. So many good collaborations being dampened or stopped at a critical time for clean energy projects. We also need to highlight just how GOOD we are at fission science here in the UK. This morning’s energy mix 27% nuclear fission from our ageing fleet. 16% French nuclear (43% total). Removing nuclear (a real concern if we do nothing before the end of the decade) takes away our only proven way of generating reliable, clean electricity in the UK when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow (like this morning - go July!).

Eradicating child poverty should be biggest priority for the UK government. This shared mission will bring together all political parties. I would like to thank Scottish Government for including eradicating child poverty as a key priority. https://www.gov.scot/news/first-minister-welcomes-prime-minister-to-bute-house/ I am looking forward to see what steps the Scottish Government and UK Government will take for eradicating child poverty. This article 'You can hear your stomach growling': Kids call on next government to do more to end child poverty published in Big Issue on 10 June 2024 highlights the issue of poverty that is impacting millions of children across the UK. Congrats to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office teams for all the prep work behind this meeting - crunching through shared challenges, national priorities and regional approaches with top tier S+T partners is SO valuable. Demonstrated by having Sir Patrick Vallance in the hot seat already (!) as our new Science Minister. The success of Chandrayaan-3 as the first-ever mission to land near the moon's south pole proved India’s ‘quantum jump’ in space sector. A new era of UK-India tech co-operation has begun. Recognising the increasing role of technology in national security and economic development, the Prime Ministers of India and the United Kingdom are launching a new ‘Technology Security Initiative’ (TSI) to elevate the strategic partnership between the 2 countries to the next level. The TSI builds upon the ambitious bilateral cooperation agenda set out in the India-UK Roadmap 2030, and will bring into sharper focus collaboration in critical and emerging technologies (CET) across priority sectors. I'd like to see a return on public spending for the benefit of the public, since they finance the circus.
