I’m now five weeks into my new job at the NEC Group and I’ve been loving learning all about our venues, with a particular focus on the beautiful city-centre venue The ICC Birmingham. Put very simply, my job is to promote not just our venues but also Birmingham as the ideal destination to host any kind of event. So, this is what I have learned: Quite simply, Birmingham is awesome. I knew that already as a Brummie but I think everyone else should too! It welcomes over 1 million international visitors each year and has a booming economy. What’s more, its central location and excellent transport links make it incredibly accessible by air, rail or car – in fact 90% of the UK’s population live within a four-hour drive of Birmingham! As for the ICC itself, it’s considered to be one of Europe’s premier conference venues and has flexible space to accommodate from 10 to 2,000+ delegates. Plus, the location is unbeatable with stunning canal views, vibrant bars and restaurants right next door, and get this: award-winning catering (think fresh, local, and seriously delicious - over 650 awards can't be wrong!). 80% of the food is sourced from local suppliers meaning it is not only fresh but environmentally friendly. So in short, if any of my contacts - whether you are an association, charity or corporate company – are planning any kind of event whether it’s a meeting for 10 people, a large conference, a product launch or gala dinner, you should really be considering Birmingham as your location. Please do drop me a message and I would be happy to give you more info about how we can help you to provide an experience for your delegates that they will talk about for years to come! #birmingham #iccbirmingham #events #conferencevenue #venues #corporateevents #associationevents

SPOTLIGHT ON THE NORTHERN REGION Our Northern Regional Chair, Nansi Rosenberg, explains what her role involves and the exciting future plans for the Northern Region of Interact. "I support and encourage the local branch chairs across the northern region in hosting joint events, I also organise region-wide events, and hold regular meetings with the chairs to discuss any and all things Interact – what works, what doesn’t work, the similarities and differences between the different branches. I also report back to the National Committee on how things are going in my region and whether there is scope for new branches, and I help with organising Interact’s UKREiiF offering each year. My role covers the branches in Liverpool, Manchester, Manchester South, Bradford, Harrogate, Sheffield, Humberside, Edinburgh and, of course, Leeds which is my home branch. We’ve recently organised a celebration lunch for October (with the support of the National Committee), and our next event is the UKREiiF lunch in Leeds on May 20th. I’m in discussion with Sheffield about a joint event in Wakefield and will be speaking to the other chairs about other get togethers. I also recently went up to Edinburgh to meet our Chair up there and see how we can involve them more in regional events At a recent Northern Branch Chairs' lunch we discussed all sorts of things including how we price our lunches, the scope for new branches, member numbers, levels of engagement with members, venues, potential joint events, problems (few), each branch's future plans (lots!) We’re all part of Interact because we believe making those personal connections with fellow professionals produces better outcomes for our projects – it’s not just a way of getting more work. It was widely agreed that a regional forum is a useful addition to Interact – we all work across cities and regions and this forum gives us greater engagement across the north." Why Anticipate London isn’t Worth Your Time (Or Is it?) This December, co-located trade shows Facilities Show, FIREX, IFSEC and Safety & Health Expo will now become part of newly launched Anticipate London, taking place from the 2nd to the 4th of December 2024 at ExCeL London. But let’s face it, trade shows are a colossal waste of time and money. Why would you ever want to exhibit at one? Here’s why you should definitely stay at work and miss out on all the action. Spoiler alert: we’re about to change your mind. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/danDKuG6

At the end of last year, I attended an exhibition which focussed on the hotel industry. It was busy, and any one of the exhibitors would have been happy with the footfall. Except most of the exhibitors were not happy. Far from it. They were angry. They were angry because way too many people were approaching their stand with a view to pitching to them - something I have always thought of as fundamentally wrong. These exhibitors had paid tens of thousands of pounds to sell, and yet visitors to their stand were expecting them to buy. It simply doesn't work - there's a mismatch in the mindset, and without that alignment, nothing is going to happen. There's nothing wrong with attending a trade show with a view to looking for new customers but you need to respect the space. Approach the stand, tell the exhibitors that you are after some contact information so that you can get in touch after the show, and then walk away. Now if you're reading this as an exhibitor, I'd like to invite you to consider a better option, and that's to attend a DP Business Events forum. We invite senior buyers and decision makers from leading hotel groups across the UK and Europe and - as you might expect - they are there to actually BUY. They're looking for new partners and new suppliers and therefore their minds are exactly where you need them to be. You're talking about a receptive audience of decision makers and the means to present to them at a lower cost than exhibiting at a trade show. Our next Hotel Industry Forum is at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate at the end of February. To share in the vast amount of business that's going to be done, please drop a comment or give me a call on 020 8075 1850.
