🌟 Just wrapped up an incredible week at the VivaTech 2024 Summit in Paris with Enguerrand TURCAT and Titouan Verhille! 🌍 This year, Japan was honored as the country of the year, and I had the unique opportunity to engage with numerous Japanese companies on site and discuss innovative IT solutions. 💻 🇯🇵 One of the most exciting moments was witnessing a live intervention by the Prime Minister of Japan, 岸田 文雄 (Fumio Kishida), and engaging with the Japanese delegation present there! 🙌 It was a remarkable experience to gain insights directly from leaders who are shaping the future of technology. 💬 I also had the chance to see Hiroshi Mikitani, chairman and CEO of Rakuten Group Inc., who shared his vision on the future of technology and business concerning mobile networks in the AI age. His presence added significant value to the discussions and highlighted Japan's leading role in the tech world. 🏢 💼 Japan has always been at the forefront of technological innovation, and this summit reinforced its position as a country of great interest for the future. 🌐 The networking opportunities were invaluable, opening doors to potential job opportunities and collaborations with some of the leading minds in the industry. 🤝 💡 VivaTech was a treasure trove of new technologies and cutting-edge innovations, particularly in the realm of AI. 🤖 I had the privilege of attending inspiring conferences featuring renowned speakers like Yann LeCun from Meta, among many others. The insights and knowledge gained have left me more excited than ever about the future of AI and its potential to revolutionize industries! Tech giants start to treat Southeast Asia like the next big thing Summary: Southeast Asia is rapidly transitioning from a peripheral player to a pivotal hub in the global technology landscape, attracting substantial investments and attention from major tech giants. The region's emergence as a tech epicenter is highlighted by significant commitments from CEOs of leading companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia, who have recently engaged heavily with countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. This heightened interest is driven by a confluence of factors. The geopolitical landscape, with increasing tensions between the U.S. and China, and the complexities of operating in India, has made Southeast Asia's neutral stance and business-friendly policies more appealing. Moreover, the region's young and growing population is eager to embrace technologies such as video streaming, online shopping, and generative AI, which necessitates robust digital infrastructure. Apple and Microsoft have been particularly active, with Apple planning new stores and Microsoft engaging in high-level discussions across several countries. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to tap into the region's developing markets, where digital services are expected to expand significantly. For instance, Southeast Asia's middle-class population is projected to make up about 65% of its demographics by 2030, potentially doubling the market for internet-based services to $600 billion. The strategic shift is also underscored by the burgeoning need for data centers to support the explosive growth of data consumption driven by AI and cloud computing. With a compound annual growth rate of approximately 25% projected for data center demand in Southeast Asia through 2028, the region is set to become the second largest non-U.S. source of data center revenue globally. This pivot to Southeast Asia is not without its challenges, including navigating diverse cultural, political, and economic landscapes. Nonetheless, the advantages—such as a skilled, yet cost-effective workforce—outweigh these obstacles, offering tech companies vital resources for developing advanced technologies like large language models. Tech leaders are not just investing financially but are also actively participating in capacity-building efforts, such as Microsoft's commitment to train 2.5 million people in AI skills by 2025. It's been four months since I've come up to New York to market Singapore's business ecosystem to the US - here are three things I've learned so far: 1) Customers come first - Seeing the surge in #GenAI companies in the US was phenomenal, but everyone is now looking for customers and ways to earn revenue on their products. As a city with one of the highest densities of decision-makers, Singapore is investing in AI technology applications as part of its National AI Strategy 2.0 (https://lnkd.in/dcyqZ6Rp), providing global AI companies a chance to build for purpose. 2) Flight to credibility - As a marketer who attends many industry-leading conferences, especially in areas such as #decarbonization, sometimes it can get easy to be sceptical about the claims and promises made. I am sympathetic to businesses that must distinguish the signal from the noise, especially as they look for sincere opportunities for their technologies to scale and make an impact. I am glad that Singapore takes its credibility very seriously - it promises only what it can deliver and invests resources into effecting its plans (https://lnkd.in/dAQXeQMD). This has resonated well with many US companies. 3) Everything boils down to talent - One thing that's consistently come up is that businesses will go wherever the #talent is. In an economy where ideas shape innovation, and where innovation decides survival, companies resonate with the policy evolutions made in the last few years to enable the building of powerful teams (https://lnkd.in/dfcYFYk8). For US companies, distance can just be a number when you have the right people on board. What do you think - what other trends should I look out for and what else may I have missed?
