Yesterday, we observed the International Day of People with Disabilities, a day dedicated to spreading awareness, understanding, and acceptance of individuals with disabilities. The theme of this year, 'We're Better Together', underscored the collective strength found in our communities, workplaces, teams, friendship circles, and families. So, the theme for International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) was announced today and I am MAD! The theme for this year is, "United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities". BUT what the hell does this even mean?! Why is the theme for a day about celebrating accessibility and inclusion for the disability community globally so inaccessible every year! This theme needs to come in plain language and easy English formats so that everyone can understand it! Otherwise, this is not equitable accessibility! It doesn't make sense to me that such a huge political organisation like the United Nations can't even make something as straight forward as a theme accessible and inclusive. This also sets a horrible example globally for what best practice is in creating access to equitable information.
