Autonomy is a key aspect of both business and military operations, but what does it really mean? When it comes to making decisions, is it more important to have control over the process or the solution? Drawing a parallel between business and the military, the latter is a prime example of a highly regulated, disciplined, and motivated group of people who are well-trained in their craft. While they are granted autonomy, it is based on the solution and not the process. In large enterprises operating in highly regulated and risk-averse climates, it is imperative to provide teams with the right decision guardrails to encourage creativity in finding solutions. However, complete freedom from control is not an option as controls keep us within regulations. Leaders in both business and the military can provide their teams with the freedom to design the solution, while adhering to the necessary controls. As General Patton said, "Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity."
