🌿 Exploring Europe's Wetlands for a Sustainable Future! 🌿 Our project focuses on assessing and enhancing the vital role that wetlands play across 5 pilot sites in Europe. These ecosystems are critical for biodiversity, carbon storage, and climate resilience. 🌱 Today, we share with you the breathtaking French Camargue pilot site, a unique wetland spanning nearly 150,000 hectares. This triangle delta spans 80 km of sandy Mediterranean shoreline, between the gulfs of Aigues-Mortes and Fos. Here, thanks to the Wetland4Change project we are studying effective models, and soon we will be testing innovative solutions to enhance carbon sequestration and improve flood risk prevention. 💡 The Camargue is not only a natural solution to climate change and flood protection but also a haven for wildlife ! 🌍 📌 Local project partner : Tour du Valat 🌐 Learn more about the project's pilot site : https://lnkd.in/d2BZiQTn #InterregEuroMED #NaturalHeritage #EcosystemRestoration #RestorationLaw #wetland #Mediterranean #Biodiversity #EU

It’s World Oceans Day tomorrow! An international day declared by the United Nations to mobilize the public to celebrate the value of oceans. What better day to feature underwater Antarctica! With its amazing biodiversity, these waters support incredible marine life such as the Gentoo penguin and kelp forests (shown here). Kelp communities have higher plant & animal diversity than almost any other ocean community, similar to a rainforest. (360-degree photo taken at Half Moon Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica.) The theme of World Oceans Day 2024 & its multi-year action theme is “Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate”. By creating movements through collaboration, citizens can highlight calls to action and efforts to restore natural coastal and ocean ecosystems, protect areas of land and water & other important environmental efforts. Our marine ecosystem protection successes and work in both impacted and pristine areas such as Antarctica, provide ways for the public, scientists & partners to support this blue planet that we all share. Follow us as we work to conserve ecologically important ocean regions globally. Join us on an expedition or visit our website to learn more about our conservation efforts. Shout outs to the talented citizen scientists, volunteers, sponsors, supporters, guides, partners, and all those working behind the scenes to help Shark Team One with our mission in Antarctica and around the world. #WorldOceansDay #SharkTeamOne #underwater #Antarctica FastField, Inc., Think Tank Photo, Aurora Expeditions, Esri, Huish Outdoors

As we celebrate Coral Reef Awareness Week, we recognize the vital importance of these underwater ecosystems. Coral reefs not only support incredible biodiversity but also protect coastlines, support fishing industries, and promote tourism. Sadly, they are facing unprecedented threats from climate change, pollution, and unsustainable fishing practices. In our ongoing commitment to preserving these natural treasures, we are proud to continue our support for the Coral Restoration Foundation™. This incredible organization has been instrumental in restoring damaged reefs, educating the public, and advocating for policies that protect our oceans. But our mission doesn't stop there! To ensure global coverage and make an even greater impact, we are excited to announce our support for the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL). https://hubs.ly/Q02G-f0R0 CORAL is one of the largest global NGOs focused exclusively on protecting coral reefs. They work at local, regional, and global levels to keep coral reefs healthy, so they can adapt to climate change and survive for generations to come. Let’s protect and restore coral reefs for future generations. Every effort counts, and your support can create waves of positive change. #CoralReefAwareness #OceanConservation #CoralRestorationFoundation #SaveOurReefs #Sustainability #ProtectOurPlanet

WWF Global Arctic Programme's new, interactive report explores Arctic whales’ migratory behaviour across the entire Arctic Ocean. The report looks at the blue corridors, migration superhighways, that Arctic whales use to move between important habitats. This includes: 1) Where blue corridors are in the Arctic Ocean. 2) When the corridors are being used by the whales. 3) And how these whales’ journeys overlaps with ship traffic. The report introduces new large-scale maps showing the blue corridors for Arctic whales. These maps are the first to cover the entire Arctic Ocean and include detailed information about each whale population. WWF created these maps by combining the latest shipping traffic data with whale migration routes to highlight the pressures whales face from ships. By protecting blue corridors – in the Arctic and beyond – we ensure that whales and other marine animals can reach the habitats they need for those important life events. https://lnkd.in/gZaNf4Ef #arctic #arcticocean #whales #migration #seaice #oceans #wildlifecorridors #bluecorridors #climate #environment

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀? Coastal ecosystems in Croatia and Italy, though separated by the Adriatic Sea, face similar challenges in the battle against climate change. These ecosystems provide crucial habitats for birds, fish, and countless other species, yet they stand on a delicate balance. Threats like rising sea levels, salinization, and extreme weather events—droughts and floods—are tipping that balance, putting these vital ecosystems at serious risk. In response, April 2024 saw the launch of the project ACTION, with a budget of €2,402,734 funded by Interreg Italy-Croatia 2021-2027. The project aims to increase the resilience of coastal ecosystems to climate change by implementing nature-based solutions (NbS). Focusing on four pilot sites within the Natura 2000 network in Italy and Croatia, scientists are identifying threats and developing tailored solutions to adapt these fragile ecosystems to new climate conditions over the long and medium term. The lead partner is the Ravenna Municipality in Italy, while the coordination of activities in Croatia is led by the Ruđer Bošković Institute under the direction of dr. sc. Sandi Orlic. Ruđer’s scientists will study risks and propose protective measures for sites like Park prirode Vransko jezero and the City of Ploče. Together with partners from Italy, including Po Delta Park and the Regional Nature Park Coastal Dunes from Torre Canne to Torre San Leonardo, the project fosters international collaboration, blending scientific expertise with practical solutions. Over the next 30 months, ACTION will culminate in the creation of a Joint Action Plan, utilizing NbS such as wetland restoration, reforestation, and improved water management. This plan will not only safeguard the chosen sites but also serve as a blueprint for other regions facing similar climate-related challenges. #ACTION #CoastalEcosystems #NatureBasedSolutions #Italy #Croatia #Interreg #ClimateChange #Sustainability #Biodiversity

In addition to the Great Barrier Reef Australia has three other World Heritage listed reefs – Ningaloo and Shark Bay in Western Australia, and Lord Howe Island, 600 kilometres off the New South Wales coast, the southernmost coral in the world. This month, the Australian government will be under scrutiny to prove it has upheld its international commitments to protecting these reefs in a meeting with the World Heritage Committee. New research has found all four of these reefs are in greater danger than we thought. At 1.5°C of warming, we are likely to lose about 20% of the 400-odd coral species which currently live across these four reefs (equating to about 70 extinctions). Our two Indian Ocean reefs at Shark Bay and Ningaloo actually face more species and function loss than the Great Barrier Reef, and all should be considered for the list of World Heritage sites in danger.
