Tourism Diversity Matters celebrates National Disability Independence Day, which commemorates the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990. There is much work to be done to continue to guarantee accessibility and belonging for all. We can educate ourselves on the policies and rights afforded by the ADA, donate to disability-rights organizations, speak out about discrimination when we see it, hire people with disabilities, advocate at all levels of government for increasingly inclusive policies, and use thoughtful, people-first language when talking about disabilities. Those working in tourism can ensure their marketing materials are accessible to everyone, display imagery that reflects people of all abilities, clearly outline how their organization makes their facilities and activities suitable for an array of ability levels, and work with a diverse group of subject-matter experts to inform and influence policies, training, content and tourism offerings. #TourismDiversityMatters #Accessibility #accessibletravel #DisabilityIndependenceDay SearchWide Global Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau ConferenceDirect ASM Global Freeman Company Destination DC Destinations International U.S. Travel Association IMEX Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board Simpleview Spectra New York City Tourism + Conventions Miles Partnership Visit Lauderdale ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership Visit Baltimore MGM Resorts International Institute for Diversity Certification, (IDC), Inc. I help leaders build liberatory cultures so their teams can become more unified so they can focus on their mission and do great work together. Looking for Co-Conspirators to Change the World.
It's Mardi Gras and it feels like I should absolutely send flowers to New Orleanian Rhonda Broussard, the CEO of Beloved Community. I really love how Beloved Community approaches rest and time off. So often organizations try use unlimited PTO to solve the need for more rest. But research shows that people with unlimited PTO often end up taking *less* time off (https://buff.ly/3OGWwBE ). I believe it's because we're using an individual solution for a problem that requires a collective approach. When Rhonda and her team were explore how they could embed a practice of rest into their organization, they found they needed a collective approach and now take a monthly sabbatical together in February. https://buff.ly/3wn8cDe Rhonda makes sure to emphasize that this rest practice isn't about finding a way to be more productive. Community rest is an act of resistance and part of Beloved's mission to change workplaces and communities to be more compassionate, able to create with abundance, and move towards collective liberation. Beloved intentionally built their business model to include rest, which has allowed them to grow and thrive while embracing rest. I'm really inspired by how Rhonda built this liberation practice while growing an organization. Rhonda proves a liberated economic model CAN exist. We can thrive AND rest. Laissez les bon temps rouler! (Et bon repos!) This #BlackHistoryMonth, I'm celebrating 29 Black women who have influenced me through the ways they pursue their own liberation. Black women's work is often unrecognized and not cited, and this month I'm determined to pass out a few flowers to Black women. #Day13 #29LoveLettersToBlackWomen #GiveBlackWomenTheirFlowers

These are leaders have made inclusion and accessibility a fundamental principle of their work. They are always looking to identify solutions to obstacles and practices that stand in the way of full and equal access for individuals with disabilities and sometimes that involves creating new approaches that can be scaled up in other locations. That’s how the Champions drive systematic change and a more inclusive future. #inclusion #disability #accessibility
TravelAbility recently released its 24 Accessibility Champions to Watch in 2024, highlighting business leaders who have made #Inclusion and #Accessibility a fundamental principle of their work to create a more inclusive future for people with #Disabilities. When I launched AccessNow in 2015 people told me I should build a charity instead because “the market wasn’t big enough”. Today, “in the ever-evolving world of accessible travel, where the horizons of exploration are so often limited by systemic barriers and attitudinal hurdles, a profound transformation is taking place thanks to the relentless dedication of a selection of individuals with lived experience of Disability.” -Sophie Morgan writes for Condé Nast Traveler A lot has changed since 2015. People have changed. Now we find ourselves on the cusp of a remarkable new era of travel, one which may well culminate in a barrier-free planet. It’s an honour to be listed as one of “14 people making the world more accessible” amongst so many friends I admire. The future is in fact accessible. Your adapted holiday of a lifetime in Lanzarote 🏝 | Scottish holiday provider catering for people with disabilities ♿️ | Running LanzAbility and Adventure Holidays Lanzarote | Book a free holiday discovery call!
What if you could actually make it happen? I like people who dream big. But what I like even more is people who also make their dreams come true. When I first came to Lanzarote over 14 years ago, this island, like many other beautiful holiday destinations, was largely inaccessible for people with disabilities. Sure, there were a few travel agencies that offered adapted accommodation and transfers. But for most people with disabilities, Lanzarote would always remain a bucket-list dream. Through my own life journey and my personal experience with disabilities, I thought of ways to make Lanzarote more accessible. Not by changing the rugged lava fields or installing ramps on every beach. 🌋 But by envisioning adapted experiences. This includes adapted accommodation, transfers, disability equipment, etc. But it doesn’t stop there. It’s about finding other things to do and see on the island that ARE or CAN BE MADE accessible with the right adjustments and personnel. A very simple example of an adapted experience that no one seemed to be able to offer are our private wine tasting tours for people with disabilities. We’ll provide an adapted vehicle and make sure we choose bodegas that are fully accessible for wheelchairs. 🍷🍇 So, if Lanzarote has been at the top of your bucket list for a while but you’re unsure about visiting the island with your disabilities, our team and I have got you covered. Make your dream come true and spend a holiday of a lifetime with us on SUNNY Lanzarote. #adaptedholiday #accessibility #disability #Lanzarote #LanzAbility
