📌 A super case study relating to the industrial electric motor industry sector. Today's video demonstrates the creation of a threaded sleeve with an external diameter of 450 mm. The difficulty of this piece, made both on the lathe and on the mill, was to obtain the 45° chamfer between the tap thread and the milled throat. The reason? 👨🔧 To do this we needed to clamp the component in place during the machining process, making handling and positioning in the machine more of a challenge. A facing tool is mounted into a tool holder that rests on the carriage of the lathe. The tool will then feed perpendicularly across the part's rotational axis as it spins in the jaws of the chuck. PURPOSE OF FACE OPERATION Facing is an operation of machining the end of a workpiece that is perpendicular to the rotating axis. During the facing, the tool moves along the radius of the workpiece to produce the desired part length and a smooth face surface by removing a thin layer of material.

The further the workpiece is from the workholding, the less rigid and stable it becomes. If, for instance, your part has a length to diameter ratio of 10:1, chatter resulting from the tool vibration can compromise tolerance and surface finish specifications. A part with a 2x length to diameter ratio, on the other hand, is exceptionally rigid, allowing for efficient and precise machining. If your part exceeds the recommended ratio, we can still machine it, but we’ll have to use a workaround, like engaging the tailstock to add a center drilled hole.
