🌱 Empowering Farmers through Horticulture: Cultivating Sustainable Livelihoods 🌱 We are excited to announce a major milestone in our Holistic Rural Development Project in Block Man, Dist. Satara, funded by HDFC Bank CSR and implemented by AFARM, Pune. Our recent horticulture plantation initiative is paving the way for sustainable livelihoods and better natural resource management in our communities. As part of this initiative, we have distributed Keshar mango saplings to local 130 farming families, providing them with a valuable cash crop that promises long-term economic benefits. To ensure the success of these plantations, we have also provided vermicompost and white root development- humic acid, supporting healthy soil and robust plant growth.  Looking ahead, we plan to distribute drip irrigation sets a crucial step towards efficient water use and sustainable farming practices in draught prone area like Man Block. This initiative is not just about improving incomes; it's about fostering a deeper connection between our farmers and the land, ensuring that our resources are managed wisely for future generations. “De-risking agriculture and decarbonizing the potato supply chain by promoting climate-smart varieties and localizing production clusters” We're proud to highlight our ongoing program, which is making a significant impact on Potato Value chain stakeholders including farmers, processors, retailers, farmer producer collectives etc. in Assam and Bihar. This program is designed to uplift and empower farming communities by de-risking potato cultivation through the introduction of climate-smart potato varieties, enhancing farm income, and reducing CO2 emissions from the potato supply chain in these regions. 🌱The program focuses on the introduction of climate-resilient potato varieties sourced from Agrico (Netherlands), 🌾 cultivating demo plots, and 🎓 building the capacity of farmers through training and Farmer Field Schools. Additionally, 🏫 Potato Business Schools are being conducted for lead farmers and agri-entrepreneurs with efforts also directed towards 🔗 facilitating market linkages and piloting the farm gate level modular potato cold store to strengthen the entire value chain. So far, the under program has reached over 3000 farmers covering more than 500 acres of potato cultivation, resulting in a reduction of more than 100 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions. These achievements are a testament to the collaborative efforts of our partners, including the U.S. Department of State, and Nordic Development Fund (NDF) supported The Lightsmith Group, who have been instrumental in driving this initiative forward. 🌱 By embracing change, we cultivate a more prosperous and resilient tomorrow. In Jharkhand, women farmers are shifting from subsistence farming to commercial farming through adoption of scientific methods. Through the Main Bhi Kisaan initiative, 25,000+ women farmers have been empowered with Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in areas like leaf clipping for paddy, usage of zinc and potash for paddy, seed treatment and Nutrient Management for Potato. In addition, women farmers are also learning about seed selection, nursery management, pest and nutrient management, and post-harvest management to reduce loss. This knowledge is enabling them to boost productivity and enhance income. Moreover, for ensuring last-mile delivery of services and capacity development, over 280 Ajeevika Krishi Mitras (AKMs) have been trained under our programme’s Master-Trainer model. These women farmers, connected to the initiative through Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), are being supported by government departments, research institutions like ICAR, and Business Development Service (BDS) providers to access high-quality inputs, sustainable infrastructure and advanced Agri tools. Plant A Tree For Life has been the organization's pioneering and longest-running project. The project started to help farmers diversify from #fieldcrops to #horticulturecrops. This strategic intervention encourages horticulture farming among the farmers as it offers higher returns, needs less water and labour, enhances the environment, and improves the family's nutrition. It promises higher financial returns and necessitates environmental benefits, creating a win-win situation for both the farmers and the environment. A remarkable achievement of this year is the planting of 38824 saplings benefiting about 1000 farmers at distinct locations, namely, Rewari, Guna, Alwar, Bulandshahar, and Mahendragarh districts. Until last year, we have planted 1,07,877 saplings, benefiting around 3473 farmers. He praised the government's decision to set MSP by adding a 50% profit margin over the cost of production, a step that has provided security to farmers.
